Oil Pressure Gauge Not Working

I have a 92 firebird v6. THe oil gauge only has lines on the far right side and the rest of the face is blank. The gauge stays in the middle where there are no lines. I changed out the oil sending unit and still the same problem. I then bought a mechanical oil pressure gauge and it shows good pressure. However, even with the oil send unit not plugged the oil pressure gauge is still staying in the middle. Does anyone know what could be the problem. I was thinking of getting a new instrument cluster from a junkyard and trying that. Is there anything else that could be causing the false reading. Wiring at the oil sending unit seems to be in good shape and getting a good connection. Any advice?

Re: Oil Pressure Gauge Not Working

This would indicate a bad cluster/gauge. Either the gauge is not getting any power or it's malfunctioning.
Do all other gauges work flawlessly?

i have a similar problem with mine... execpt mine pins to max pressure at startup and stays pinned. and all my other gauges are fine minus the gas gauge which is a dirty liar most times... but is fairly accurate others.

When the gauge stays maxed during run its the sender that usually the culprit

Unplug it and look at the connector. A bad sender will pump oil up into the connector pins

Re: Oil Pressure Gauge Not Working

Tom, you might be thinking of the coolant temperature gauge which has an inverted resistance dependency. The oil pressure, however, has 0 resistance with no pressure and 90 ohm resistance at 60psi. So if the wire was grounded, the gauge would be pegged at 0.
