tach wire prevents ignition

I've got an 87 TPI setup, where the coil has four input pins. Two of these go to the pickup coil, one goes to the tach, and one is power. When the tach wire is connected there is no spark, but runs fine when it's disconnected. Is it possible to get the tach working again or do I need to chase down a new one?

Re: tach wire prevents ignition

The real quesiton is:
is it the tachometer that's grounding the tach wire or is it the actual wire that's shorted somewhere under the dash?
If you pull out the instrument cluster and the engine starts, the tachometer is to blame.
