1991 speedo help

Sorry in advance if this has been answered before, believe it or not I've been reading up for a week and haven't been answered this yet. It's a multi-part thing so bear with me.

The car is a 91 camaro rs 3.1 liter(for now)

First, what does the cable off of the VSS run to? I can see it make its way above the tranny but the chilton manual doesn't mention where to on the 90-92 models. Second, some people told me to clean the speedo cable to make it work all the time and stop the jumping. is there and end taht i have to lube and clean behind the gauge cluster? I thought i read that all that is back there is a wiring harness like you would find behind a cd player.

I was going to replace teh whole cluster with aftermarket gauges but realized taht most of them are cable-driven and my speedo is not (from what i read). If I were to go ahead and get all aftermarket gauges, what would be some good ways to wire those in with the least amount of mods? Unfortunately, most of this forum only helps those predating 1990. it seems that the only thing people know for sure is that the 90-92 speedo is different. any help is appreciated.

Re: 1991 speedo help

Your car has an electronic speedo; there is no cable. You'll have a VSS on the tail shaft of the trans with two wires, one of which is purple, the other yellow. They go to either the ECM (TPI) or a yellow buffer box (TBI) under the dash, pass side. Following is a link to wiring, which you may find helpful:

For more info search on 'speedo' and 'VSS" and several pages of info will pop up on electronic speedos.

Re: 1991 speedo help

So is there another wiring harness that runs from the computer to the cluster?
