electric fan blowing fuses - Third Generation F-Body Message Boards

1985 camaro z28 305 TPI

a couple days ago i noticed my fan wasn't turning on. i know its supposed to run hot and the fan is to kick in around 230 degrees. so i decided to just put it on a switch in the cockpit.

i already check the fan and its free moving and does turn when i put power to it

here's my problem. I'm using a fuse and every time i connect it to power the fuse blows

now i have a stock fan. i am using 30a fuse, and 12 gauge wire

my set up is positive battery terminal to fuse and then to switch.
ground from switch and fan are connected to negative terminal.
and aux from switch to the positive lead on the fan

this is my first time trying to do anything electrical which is why i want it separated from all my other electrical in my car

am i doing anything wrong. how do i keep it from blowing my fuses, is the fan pulling more than it should. should i just skip the fuse all together or would that cause an issue

your help would be greatly appreciated, im so lost

Perhaps try grounding the switch closer to the switch, instead of the neg. battery terminal.

i was having trouble trying to find a place to ground it. ill see if i can find a beeter one. how would the length blow the fuse? and then i also have another question, how much amps does a stock 1985 fan pull?

i was just looking at something and it said there could be a short in the fan motor. could that be the problem and why would that be the case??? what would cause the motor to have a short in it

alright i decided to go buy a new fan motor and it did the trick.
