Ok, I finally decided on a car. It's a "pre-crashed" '92 RS. It's got the typical DPO brainiac 'mods' done to it so I'm getting rid of all the little issues.
I was told that the A/C didn't work and that there's a switch to turn the electric fan on the radiator on. WTF?
So I check the fuses and there's no 25amp fuse in the FAN slot. I throw one in and start the car. I flip the switch for the A/C and it comes on, get's cold and the radiator fan kicks on like it's supposed to. Then... sniff sniff... hm, weird. ah.. there's the smoke. So, I assume that the DPO nicked a wire during his 'mods' for putting the stock stereo back if for a quick sale of the car. I pull the console/dash apart. Remove the radio and start the car, a/c on, etc... smoke. Hm, ok. Coming from behind the controls for the a/c stuff. Take that all loose so it's sitting down low. Now I can see the top of it. Start car, a/c on.. smoke. Oooh! Lookie! That big plastic disc/switch thing made of black plastic has two hot spots, glowing red, burning through the plastic. Sweet! Tracked down the bad part. Pulled it out... guessing this will be a dealer item.

it's behind the dash. When you move that a/c:heat lever for OFF-MAX-NORMAL-VENT, etc. It moves this 'switch' which has a molded connector that goes to the wiring harness. It's obviously bad and the only thing I need to actually have working a/c and heat... and the radiator fan working properly. Now... to find a chevy dealer that's still in business!
Installed the above part and it would seem that everything is working as it should be. Think I need to have the a/c charged as the compressor seems to cycle on and off more than it should. Will throw a guage on it and see what's going on.
The alien spaceship thingy in question is the blower motor speed switch. ANY decent parts store should have or be able to get quickly this item. It is not the blower motor resistor. If it were you would only have one speed for the blower and that would be high. The blower resistor is located close to the blower motor and is inserted in the airstream to keep it cool. Usually poor connections cause switch contacts to fail. Clean all of them at the switch location, the resistor, and fan motor connections. Make sure the fan motor is grounded well. Hope this helps.
