This VATS System is Driving me NUTSSSS HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!

Hey guys i am going insane and ready to blow up my camaro.

Its a 89 rs 2.8l V6 5 speed

I replaced the ICM Dis. Cap, wires and plugs, reset timing to 10 BTDC like the sticker on the hood said. Im getting fuel to the rail but im guessing the injectors are not firing. I checked the fuse under the dash for the INJ fuse, its fine.

So i came to the conclusion that its the VATS System on the car.

The previous owner changed out the IGN. cylinder, and got keys without the VATS Chip installed. So it is impossible for me to measure the correct resistence for the VATS System to bypass it that way.

So i bypassed it by grounding the grean wire on the relay under the drivers side kick panel.

It turns over but will not START.

I tried hooking the green wire up back into the factory harness and trying all 15 combinations of GM Resistences for the VATS System.

But with the green wire connected in the harness, not grounded, it wont even turn over no matter which combination of resistors i use.

but when i hook the 2 wires coming from the IGN cylinder without resistors, and the green wire on the relay grounded, it will turn over, but not start.

IM GOIN INSANE Trying to figure this out can someone help me PLEASE!!!!!

VATS also enables the fuel control circuit of the ECM. Without a 30Hz signal from the VATS module, you won't have fuel control. One of those 15 combinations MUST work for the module, unless there are wires not hooked up AT the module or between the module and the key cylinder.

ok tommorow ill go threw all 15 combinations again, maybe i messed up a couple of them.

just to be sure, in between trying these combos, i have to reset the computer by connecting, and disconnecting the negative terminal on battery right?

and if im trying these combos out should i reconnect the green wire for the relay behind the drivers side kick panel, or can i keep it grounded?

you don't have to reset the computer everytime. when it gets the right resistor, it will start (assuming it is a vats issue).

reconnect that wire you took out wherever it's supposed to go.

Re: This VATS System is Driving me NUTSSSS HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!

You did remember to turn the key off while you were switching key codes, right? You can't just leave the ignition on while you make the switch. You have to power down the VATS system while you change the keys (as though you were physically switching keys in the ignition lock).

I know this is frustrating... I switched my engine control system from my 87 to that from a 91 and was forced to add VATS. Not knowing the key code for the module, I was forced to find it. Luckily it was the fourth one I tried (and I had previously thought that I had gone through them all the day before).

Re: This VATS System is Driving me NUTSSSS HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!

This is for Maverick: I see that you replaced your 700r4 for a 5 speed Manual trans. What ECU/ECM are you runing with your 3.1? How did you address the auto trans wires? Can you share your engine wiring diagram? I am droping a 91 3.1 from a firebird into another vehicle. It had a 4L60 auto trans and 1227730 ECU/ECM. I also have the complete wiring harness. Your help would be appreciated.
