tach on pause with headlights on

First off, i just was wondering if everybody on here feels like their car just slaps them in the face about once a week?

anyway... when i turn on my headlights and dashlights the tach just freaks out like its spring loaded for a sec then stops at any given rpm. as well as the oil pressure guage reads ZERO which pretty much sucks.

But here is the good part so get ready!!! if you dim the dash lights all the way down till they turn off ......... the tach unfreezes and the oil pressure reads right again. however it is really hard to see them without the dash lights on you know???

Re: tach on pause with headlights on

I had a similar problem and the copper threads on the back of the cluster had a break. I found the break and soldered it and it works fine now. If you cant find the break, I was considering jumpering the ground from the good side of the cluster to the bad side but found the break (next to the pass side turn signal socket) so this wasn't needed. good luck.

Re: tach on pause with headlights on

My gages act funny, similar to yours. What it is, is the gauge cluter is loose, I changed to a z28 cluster in my berlinetta, and havnt fineshed putting the faceplate and everything back together, and Ive only got it held in with a couple of bolts. try pushing on the cluster and holding it in tight, (to make sure it is conecting to the electrical plugs in the back) and then do the things that make the gages act funny and see if it stops. probly want to pull the black plastic face place off and then push on the housing of the gauges, or you could try pushings on the clear plastic infront of the faces of the gages themselfs. When you are turning your lights 0n/off, it may be just the right movement to be causing the connections in the back of the cluster to have a bad conection. Or the connections may be dirty some how and need to be cleaned and youll have to pull out the gauge cluster and clean the connections. Please ignor the miss spellings
