HELP,,
ok,i just put a new column in my 92 rs.
well,it's not new,but diffrent.
i just put an 89 column in my 92 rs and everything has been going just great.
i have drove the car at lease 200 miles,or more with no problems.
this morning i get in it and head about 7 miles one way to the cionvenient store.
when i pull back in my driveway my steering wheel is loose.
i pull the horn button for better look.
the big bolt that holds wheel on is tight.
the steering wheel is very loose and just wiggles back/forth.
nothing moves but the wheel.
anyone tell me what my problem is?
i have driven it for over a week with no problems.
how can it just all a sudden get loose??
i seem to be having nothing but bad luck with 92 camaros and steering columns.
You'll have better luck asking in the correct Forum. A steering wheel is not electrnoic. Just things like the horn button in them, are.
well stephen, what forum would you suggest i ask the question on?
cause i would like to know the correct place for a question about a
steering wheel. jd
good,i guess im not as dumb as i thought.
since that is where i started.
i figured since i got no answers there that maybe someone over here had them.
i am guessing it's not you though?
jd
the center bolt is tight. the wheel wiggles back/forth,up/down and the center bolt just stays tight and moves with the groove.
the rest of the column stays tight and doesn't wiggle.
the car steers, you can drive it but like i said the steering wheel is loose.
the wheel only.
nothing else moves. it is weird, but i guess the shaft up thru the center
is actually moving on the pivot as the wheel moves.
the column tilts,signals work,lights dim.
just the wheels is really loose. doesn't seem to be getting any more
loose, but doesn't seem to get tight any way i move it either.
it kkinda feels like it could just fall off going down the road, but don't know if that would be possible.
i drove it today, but was leary of what was going on inside there.
know what i mean?
anyone got any ideas?
anyone else ever had this problem?
jd
Mine did the same thing. Its the shaft that is loose. There is 4 bolts i believe. That are in the steering column down to where you would change the ignition. Its a tedious task. I believe on an earlier forum they said to you locktites. What i did was put a new steering column in was much easier.
I had mine done by a shop. $100 later & it's been solid as a rock for a year now. It'll happen again, if you use your steering wheel as support, getting in & out. Mine was tight when I bought the car. 2 years later & only ONE bolt was still engaged by only TWO THREADS!

Reason: fixed typos
thanks guys, this is what i been needing.
now i need to know is it dangerous to drive it like this?
can it possibly lose steering and i have no control?
yes,i have used it to get in and out.
it is hard not to the way it is made.
you either have to slide your seat back,or grab the wheel to get it.
especially in a straight gear.
It is only dangerous if you consider all the bolts coming loose and having ZERO steering control!
I never use my steering wheel as support any more. You'll find a way. I almost always need to "slide" my back down the back of the seat back. Yes, it my shirt ride up, but better than fixing the steering wheel again & I rarely even notice my shirt "problem".
Im changing my steering column as well bro just recheck all the bolts make sure there are in and if loose tighten them, you should find the problem asap just need to get under the dash and check out whats going on. in addition check your firewall behind the gas pedal and brake to make sure those three bolts are there, when changing mine i found one missing and one loose, sounds like this might be you fix.
ok,i just took a good look at the column that came out of the car.
it looks as if there are the 4 bolts that hold the steering wheel tight,ok.
but there is also the center bolt that holds the steering wheel on the shaft.
now if the 2 pieces of nylon that hold the tilt pivot in place are firmly
in place and the center bolt is taught, will the steering wheel still steer the
car safely,but loosely?
that is if all 4 bolts are completely out of the wheel, but the pivot is
firmly in place and the center bolt is taught?
not to confuse, but it looks as if the wheel will steer the car, only the up/down motion will be sloppy?
am i correct to say this?
i don't plan on driving the car everyday like this, but would like to feel some what safe driving it to the shop for repairs.
i am really getting tired of paying someone to haul my car to the repair shop.
let me know what you think??
thanks for all the info,i really appreciate everyones input.
this is the best place i have found for helping out in need.
