anyone know about elec door locks??

85 Z28.......electric door locks just quit working, when i push either switch (LH or RH door) neither lock moves at all, but i do hear a "clicking" sound coming from somewhere under the dash in the steering wheel area. is there a relay or something down there. what would cause both locks to quit? anyone had any experience with this? thanks, rick

Yes there is a relay in that car.

You have a short which is making the protective device too hot.

Use an ammeter in line with suspected wires to find which one leads to the excessive current draw.

Re: anyone know about elec door locks??

well, that could be the clicking that i am hearing.....last night i was checking in the fuse box, and one of the big metal 30a fuses (circuit breaker i think) was VERY HOT, i mean too hot to touch. i pulled it out. do circuit breakers get hot when they fail? rick

Re: anyone know about elec door locks??

Your door locks on that 85 should go through the 30 amp courtesy (or convenience) fuse in the panel and not a breaker. They're powered off the always hot circuit that also powers your courtesy lights, key buzzer and remote hatch release (if you've got one).

Clicking under the dash when pushing the button isn't a normal result of failure of that circuit but could be the result of voltage loss to another circuit when that one is energized. That and the hot fuse(s) would have me checking voltage drop and inspecting my ignition switch and it's wiring under the hush panel.
