ok, so i was driving my 88 firebird down the street and i hear a clunk and have no power steering. So i figure belt snapped. But i open the hood and my alternator islaying on the valve cover. Now, the problem is the bottom bolt stayed in the bracket and broke the alternator case, and the alternator snapped the top of the bracket. So i needed both a newbracket and a alternator. I have the parts and i looked up on alldata on how to remove the bracket, as it goes down around the power steering pump as well. I purchaseda pulley puller and tried pulling the pulley to no avail. does anybody know if theres a way to remove without taking of pulley? thanks

I'd pull the whole bracket off. you can do it with teh pulley still attached. To remove the pump though you HAVE to remove the pulley. It's a PITA but it will come off. I'd spary some PB Blaster on the snout where the pulley attached. They can get siezed on there pretty good. Might want to hit it for a minute with a propane torch as well to expand the pulley snout, then slap the pulley remover on.

AC's right; you have to get that pulley off to be able to remove the pump. The mounting bolts are about dead center behind the pulley and there's no way to get at the heads with it in the way. Since its a press fit and its been on there for some time, it will be hard to break it free.

I do find it easier to do the removal while its on the vehicle, only because the bracket will hold the pump in place and allow you a bit more leverage when working with the removal tool
