89 IROC won't start... not a bad starter or battery

Yesterday (9/9) my car worked fine. Today it won't start. Push the clutch in, turn the key, nothing. The starter doesn't turn over. Voltage drop is minimal, from 11.8 down to 11.1 when I turn the key from run to start. It's almost like power is not being directed to the starter. Battery is good, starter should be good. I checked the engine fuse and it's good. The security light does not come on, and I've tried both primary and spare keys, so it doesn't seem to be a VATS issue. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Justin

Just because I've never had a problem with one or had to work with one, what would I be looking for and what will it tell me in order to tell if it is good or bad?

I had an issue like this with my pos 89....they kept telling me its behind the clutch pedal....I never did find it. Youll have to search here for it and use a volt tester when you find it.....someone who knows better will chime in......

power comes from the battery to the ignition, to the switch, then out to the starter and what not....

Re: 89 IROC won't start... not a bad starter or battery

I came across a thread that talked about the switch, or what turned out to be switch(es). Like I mentioned before, I have never had a problem with these, so I don't know where to begin. I read about a Clutch Safety Switch and a Neutral Safety Switch. According to the names, my problem would lie in the Clutch Safety Switch. I don't know. THe biggest thing is if someone could tell me where the location of both switches are and how to test them with a voltmeter. I'm guessing to test the voltage AFTER the switch to see if the switch is letting the power go through it?

Mabye have it towed to a shop if you've got the money and need it fixed asap.

Re: 89 IROC won't start... not a bad starter or battery

Don't need it ASAP, but I'm the kind of guy that if there's a problem, I want it fixed immediately, and I do not like having the car towed and worked on at a shop due to all the extra fees and labor costs. It is my daily driver so having it fixed soon is a plus, but I do have a backup if needed.

Alright, so I have to test the clutch safety switch, which according to a repair manual, it is located on the clutch pedal assembly by the steering column, I'm gonna check the wiring going to the starter.

Anybody else with other suggestions on things that could have gone wrong?

Copy Transmission 10-4

The clutch switch is located behind the hinge part of the clutch pedal.

Visually tracing the harness that goes to it will help.

Happy Racing!
