92 Camaro Odometer/Trip odometer quit

I have a 92 Camaro, V8 305, Automatic. Car is clean and all original. The odometer is no longer working. The trip odometer is not working either. All other gauges work, including the speedo and tach. I've attempted searches on here, but my question is: Does this year have the small gears that drive or work off each other, and possibly the teeth are stripped causing both not to count. I know it does not have a cable. Please any advice for me to repair this problem. Odometer is stuck on 88,760.

If you push the trip odometer, and let it release quickly, it will sometimes cause the 1/10 mile last digit to jump, but is stuck between 5 and 6. This is why I think it may be a stuck or stripped gear.

Correct.

The speedometer/odometer assembly is replaced as a unit.

Re: Ode To A Meter

Isn't there a write up on here somewhere about a fix for the odometer/trip meter?

*edit* Found it ... Maybe it'll help:

Re: Ode To A Meter

That fix is for 82-89?? with the cable drive. Would it be the same for the 92? and if neither my trip or odometer is working, would that mean that the upper J clips may be broke as well or does the trip meter being broke affect the actual odometer. Thanks for any and all input.

Re: Ode To A Meter

I've had the whole cluster fry on me and replacved with a NEW one. sometimes the speed wouldn't work (which is why the odometers wont go) so I had the speed sensor replaced. no problems now.

Re: Ode To A Meter

I have no problems with the speedometer, or the tach. Only the odometer and trip. Do I need to drop the steering column in order to remove the entire panel safely. And anything to "watch out" for. Would hate to mess something else up in this process. Thanks for all the replies

Re: Ode To A Meter

Well finally got it apart. There are no J hooks on the back of the assembly. Where is the speed sensor located? what does it look like? Can I just replace the small motor that turns the odometer that has 4 small wires coming out the back of it?? Got it all apart, what should be my next step. Can send a pic by cell phone. My number is 972 742 4617. Call me, PM me, I need help please. Jay E

Re: Ode To A Meter

Would the speedometer still work if the speed sensor was bad. The speedometer always works, except about a year ago it jumped from 0-40 for a couple of miles but then straightened itself out. Do you suggest I install a new speed sensor, If so should I go ahead and reinstall the gauge cluster. Thanks to all.

Re: Ode To A Meter

Don't really know what a bad connection looks like, but there are no dark/burnt spots on the entire cluster. I can turn the small gear on the back of the small motor on the cluster and the odometer and trip will increase. This problem started by a jumping speedometer for a couple of miles. It would then not count the miles. Then straightened itself out. Then a couple weeks later the odometer would count sometimes and sometimes not. Usually would count the first 1-2 miles of driving then stop. Now it won't ever count mileage, but the speedometer always works?? Just trying to get those "little" things fixed. Car is in great shape, other than peeling paint on the hood and hatch deck lid. Runs great. Always clean oil after 3000 miles. Doesn't leak a drop of fluid from eng or transmission. Does have a leak around the back part of the t-tops that I can't find(rear pass seat gets wet only). And the drivers pw is slow and then overheats and stops. but the odometer is driving me crazy.

Any other ideas? Desperately need help here. Any way to "jump" the small electric motor that turns the gear for the odometer, just to check the motor. Should I start tracing wires back to the vss? Thanks

No, still have the same problem. Don't know what else to do. Think the small electric motor may have gone out. Still no prob with the speedometer, only the odometer and trip. Have any ideas, would love to hear them. Drive it one day a week, need to sell it. It is a third car for me, cant drive 2 cars at one time. Thanks for all the replies, guys and girls

Re: 92 Camaro Odometer/Trip odometer quit

I sent an e mail to Mr Whizard asking if they can fix it. They said there is a history of problems with this unit and they would have to look at it. They said it would cost $179.00 including shipping both ways if they can repair it and it would take two weeks. I'm going to ask one other place and then I think I'll give them a shot. I'll let you know what happens. This is the link to the site. http://www.mrwhizard.com

Re: 92 Camaro Odometer/Trip odometer quit

I called Southern Autotronics today and he knew exactly what I was talking about. He said it is either the motor or the circuit board and would be either $150, or $205 depending on what it is. I am shipping mine today. Here is the web address. http://www.instrumentclusters.com

Re: 92 Camaro Odometer/Trip odometer quit

Have not figured mine out?? Hate to spend more money on the car. I need to sell it. i think it is the small motor, cause the last few times it worked, it would only count about a half a mile and stop in the mornings, and the same on my way home from work. Sort of like an overheating power window: works slowly and then over heats and quits. How can i test this little motor that turns the odometer, and where can i get a replacement. thanks again

Re: 92 Camaro Odometer/Trip odometer quit

I sent mine to Southern Electronics about two weeks ago. Still waiting for it to be fixed. I called the other day to check and he had not got to it yet. Hopefully it will be in the next few days as I am also selling this car. Hard to sell a low mile car without the odometer working.

Re: 92 Camaro Odometer/Trip odometer quit

Let us know when you get it back and if your satisfied. My car also has an intermittent spedometer as well as the no odometer issue. Anyone know if that is part of the issue or if can't be related to the cluster due to it being driven by something else? I would like to kill 2 birds with 1 stone if I can.

Re: 92 Camaro Odometer/Trip odometer quit

I received my repaired cluster from Southern Electronics yesterday. Works like new and cost $215.00. I am very satisfied with the repair and the service. It took about four weeks total to get it done. They include free shipping both ways. There is a shipping label you print out and then send it by UPS. I'm glad to finally have a working odometer again.

Thanks Mike for letting us know how it went. A month is a long time during nice weather. I will have to plan a repair month and take care of a bunch of stuff when it is down for service..

Re: Ode To A Meter

I'm having a similar problem with my '91 RS. A couple of weeks ago the odo and trip odo just stopped. Have had an intermittent problem in the past with the speedometer quitting on me, but eventually it started working again. In the meantime, I took the cluster out of the dashboard (it does help to drop the steering column) and checked the pc board connectors. They look ok, but wonder if unseen wear is the culprit. My trip odo has occasionally not fully reset when I reset it after gassing up. I wonder if replacing the instrument cluster circuit board would help, if that's even possible. I too am open for suggestions. Thanks!

Re: 92 Camaro Odometer/Trip odometer quit

My only problem with sending my instrument cluster in for repair is that my Camaro is my only transport. I suppose I could drive "blind" until I get it back, as long as I fill up the tank and keep track of my mileage the old fashioned way ) Not sure if the electrical system might be adversely affected. Ideas??

Hi Colemaro. What kinds of problems? I've had numerous with my '91 RS, but I always manage to find a way to correct them. Just got my a/c fixed by way of a reman compressor. COLD air again!

Re: 92 Camaro Odometer/Trip odometer quit

Well, as usual the tach is toast, Speedo works when it wants to, cruise doesn't work, switches for mirroros /doorlocks bad,Headlights dont have brights, the sensors for the fans, and the thing sometimes doesn't want to start. Other small mechanical things that I have had to replace, I guess thats a given for wear and tear. I don't want to go in the hole that bad just to drive this car. It is my third "Z" and it is the worst of the lot. They seem to just get worse with the more modern they are. I liked it because it is a southern car and has almost zero rust. If I can get 1500 for it I will let it go to someone. Never owned a mustang, but few of my freiends have and they were pleased. Maybe it's time for a change.

Re: 92 Camaro Odometer/Trip odometer quit

There's a wesite called instrumentclusters.com that I was referred to by another 3rd Gen member. I have not sent mine in yet, but I understand they'll make your instrument cluster like new. My cruise is also on the fritz, but isn't a priority. My driver door mirror still works, passenger side is fixed. Headlights with no brights sounds like a bad contact or the switch in the steering column is bad. I was able to sort of fix mine. You are right, the more modern Camaros have more stuff that can fail. I look at this way - when I bought mine in Dec '95, I told myself I was going to keep it until it fell apart. She's lasted almost 16 years, thanks mainly to taking simple care of the important stuff - oil, tire pressure, etc, and driving smart. It also helps that she's been paid for for years, so I can't justify a car payment. I was lucky in that when I bought mine, the previous owner kept her garaged for four years, putting only 15K miles on her. The Camaro is a great car, but like all cars, they require attention and routine maintenance to keep them on the road. I wish you luck with whatever you decide!

ZOMBIE THREAD!

My 92 has a nonworking odometer as well, so I took the cluster apart today. I replaced the capacitor because it had obviously failed and leaked, corroding some other leads too. The board seems pretty simple so replacing other parts wouldn't be too hard.

I'll repost later, when I test the fix out.
