v6 gauge cluster in v8?

Will the v6 gauge cluster work in the V8 car? I like it cause it has the 6k redline. now i am pretty sure the rpms wouldnt read correctly. is there a way to make it read correctly?

Re: v6 gauge cluster in v8?

You're correct, the V6 tach will read high - it considers 6 spark pulses one revolution, while a V8 tach counts 8. I seem to remember reading something here once on how to convert a V6 tach to work with a V8, but it requires modifying the tach circuit board. With my limited electronics knowledge, I'm not sure what would actually be required to do it.

Re: v6 gauge cluster in v8?

Like Ward said - it will read to high You should find a lot of info on modifying a tach by searching the forums. Stay with a V8 tach, The 5.7 cars usually had higher Yellow/Red line readings compared to the TBI tachs. You really want the tach to ACCURATELY reflect the engines abilities...... No use for 6K on the tach if the only time you ever hit it is when the motor blows !

Ward; doesn't the v6 distrib send 3 pulses to the tach and the V8 distrib send 4 ??

Tacky Solution

Yes it does John.

Re: recalibrating tach.

Your fix is in the circuit inside the dash that moves the pointer.

It’s contained on a small plug-in PCB or integrated in the main board.

On the PCB you’ll see a resistor chip.

Desolder pins 4 & 10.

Use a 500K potentiometer.

Solder it across traces 4 & 10.

Move the potentiometer to half way.

Start the engine and compare the tach reading with a test equipment quality tach.

Dial it in, unsolder one side of the potentiometer, measure it and install a matching resistor.

Happy Racing!

When you see fog or “running” lights on in good weather beware. Low performance driver ahead.

How bout those nitwits too scared to drive without headlights in the daytime, and the nitwits that need headlights for a little rain

Re: Tacky Solution

thank you! Any pics of this procedure. Its been some time since i took apart the gauge cluster.

and 6k is redline when im drag racing and want it to match up with the odometer for the doner car that the V8 will be going in.
