wiring problems with an 84 camaro z28

my park lights wont come on, all bulbs are good, they worked before but after wiring up a new radio in the car they wont work????

the wiring was a mess int his car, the constant power wire i found was behind the gauges and its orange? the switched was a blue wire in the radio area and the ground was connected to the orange wire....

wasnt the orange wire for the park lights?

plus now when i turn my key into the on position it blows the same fuse under the dash! and that controls the radio power, i have no clue what to do, id like to just re wire it myself but i dont know what wires are what and i dont want to **** my car up anymore then it already is.....

i need some help, with this, im seriously clueless

Fusin’ It And Losin’ It

First check the fuse labeled TAIL.

Using a voltmeter or test light
(the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe both sides of the fuse to make sure there is power both sides.

Is there power both sides?

Re: wiring problems with an 84 camaro z28

ive checked that theres only power to one side, and i dont know the name of the fuse that keeps blowing, i know its a cheap brand though, i think i should run a constant straight from the battery to the fusebox then run it to the radio compartment then run another and hook it upto a toggle for the switched hot,

and also my int lights wont come on? they never have in my new gauge cluster, all the bulbs are good, im just wondering why they wont come on,

plus my tach wont work, neither will my speedo,

temp gauge works, voltage works, and gas works,

how can i get my tach to work? i tried hooking up an aftermarket and its just not working, i plugged it into the area that says :tach" on the dist and its acting like its not getting a signal?? i think the tach is bad,

anyone know where i can find the tach wire for the stock tach? ill just splice it and run it out to the dist by hand...

and as for the speedo, i have a TH350 Trans, anyine know how i can get it to work with that trans?

Re: wiring problems with an 84 camaro z28

Here's wiring diags: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=19

Scroll down you'll see many diags for 1992 Camaro - all same wiring as your 1991 Bird.

Sounds like you need to disconnect the new stereo, get the lights working again without fuses blowing, and then redo stereo.

You need to stop contemplating running new wires, and use what's there - no need to run anymore wires from battery to fusebox, no need for toggles and such - you're just making a bad situation worse. The fuse box already has a constant connection - marked BAT - a simple 1/4in male spade connector plugs right in. There's also one marked IGN - that one only gets power when key is on. There's another marked LPS for lamps - that one only gets power when the lights are turned on.

Whatever weird wiring has been done in the past, you need to correct back to the way it should be. THEN, you should have no issues at all ever again. Use the wiring diags above and correct.

Your 1991 car has a Vehicle Speed Sensor and electronic speedo - the TH350 doesn't have the right stuff to make that work - I'm sure some searches in the tranny section will tell you what you need to resolve that.

I wasn’t asking the brand name, I was asking the label on the fuse block near the fuse.

Anyway, because you have power on one side only of the TAIL fuse, that problem needs to be fixed.

Pull the fuse then use an ohmmeter to verify the fuse.

If the fuse is good, but power on one side only, the fuse is bad or the contacts to it.

The interior lights are powered thru the ACC fuse.

Check that fuse the same way as the TAIL fuse.

The gage lights are powered thru the INST LPS fuse.

Check that fuse the same way as the other fuses.

Verify the aftermarket tach works on another car, then try the tach at the non-key PRIMARY side of the igy coil.

If the engine runs, and you connect it to the non-key PRIMARY side of the igy coil a good tach will work.

At the dash the tach wire is in the right hand connector, pin 7.

If the original is still there it’s a WHITE wire.

Re: Fusin’ It And Losin’ It

Thanks NINA! ill be sure to try all of that,

ive tried hooking that aftermarket tach upto every single wire on the dist and even the coil to no avil.

i think the tach is just no good :<

but if i can get my factory tach to work ill be happy, when i turn my key on my factory tach will register

when i turn my key off it will go to 1500rpm and sit untill i turn the key on then it resets to o,

so i know its getting power, but does that have anything to do with it being connected to the dist or coil????

It’s not unusual for some tachs to go to some random spot on the dial when power is shut off.

The tach going to zero when you turn the key to RUN position before you start the engine is a good sign.

Make sure you’re doing it correctly: ground wire to battery , power wire to battery +, signal wire to coil.

If the stock tach is getting those same three items just described but doesn’t work, the movement or circuitry is bad.

Re: wiring problems with an 84 camaro z28

the thing is i dont know if the stock tach is hooked up at all, nothings plugged into the tach area on the dist,

and the wiring is a mess from the engine swap, so i think when they changed out my dist to HEI they didnt hook everything back up at all... just wanted a running driving car,
