Brake lights out
I found out today by a passing motorist that I didn't have any brake lights. The tail lights, turn signals work but not the brake lights including the high light. I checked the fuses and they all look fine. Need some guidance on where to look next.

Re: Brake lights out
Bad brake light switch could be the culprit. Check the bulbs as well.

Re: Brake lights out
where is the switch located? Is it up high. I did a little poking around but didn't really crawl underneath the dash.

right behind the brake pedel. its white/beige i believe. Its mounted to a bracket off the steering column if i remember correctly. Each time the pedal is pushed, it pushes a rod into the switch completing the circuit turnign the lights on.

Re: Brake lights out
just some info, the brake light power after it leaves the pedal switch goes up through the turn/hazard switch before it gets to the brakelights.(the third does not)
a bad turn/hazard multifunction will kill your brake lights, but the third brake light will still work.
(BUT NOT ON THE CAMARO) on a firebird it will.

Looking through the list of wiring diagrams by year, the Trans Am through 89, and all others through 85 have the brake light power go through the hazard switch.

no...... i know,it slipped past me, i have a pontiac, and the camaro is one of the few that have seperate turn lamps from the brake lamps.
the multi switch is common on the caprice, blazers, berettas, etc.(the camaro is an exception)
good catch

Re: Brake lights out
I just started having trouble with my brake lights (all of them including the high light) on my 91 firebird. If I cycle the hazard lights on and then off it seems to make the brake lights start working again for a short time. Does this help to find the problem? Thanks for any help you might have!

Re: Brake lights out
Having a similar problem with my 88 formula. The brake lights and turn signal lights are on a different fuse. I have no brake lights or hazzard. The fuse was MELTED so not sure what happened.
Replaced the fuse and did not fix problem. I pulled one brake light and it was burned out. Replaced it and nothing. New fuse did not blow. I will check/replace hazzard blinker tomorrow. I just had the darn thing inspected Tuesday and everything was fine.

Brake Break
Wire a small spare bulb such as a side marker.
Connect one lead to ground, the other lead to the orange wire coming out of the STOP HAZ fuse.
If the circuit is good the lamp will stay lit.
Connect another spare bulb from ground to the light blue wire coming out of the brake light switch.
If the circuit is good the lamp will light when you hit the brakes.
If the 2nd spare bulb ever fails to light, observe the first spare bulb.
If the first bulb is out, try the hazard trick and report.
