Cluster swap help

I know there are planty of threads somewhere on this but I'm having issues with finding them, plus I just want to hear it straight from someone else directed at me.

I have:
85 SC with Carb'd 305
85 mph cluster with the 3 light up (dummy) gauges and big fuel gauge

The donor car and cluster:
87 Z28 with Carb'd 305
115 MPH cluster with tach, and other assorted needle gauges.

My questions:
Is this gonna be a straight unscrew/unplug and plugin/screwin job?
If not why? what else do I need?
Am I going to have to find/buy a wire for the tach?
I've seen where others needed like a new oil pressure sensor and temp sensor? is this true or am I good?

Any and all responses will be GREATLY appreciated. I bought the 115 cluster this past week from a member, got it yesterday, and was hoping to put it in tomorrow.

Re: Cluster swap help

At the very least, you'll need to change the sensors on the engine for water and oil from switches to gauge senders.

Re: Cluster swap help

That's not the correct temp sender, you need one with a single wire like this one...

http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Ca...RecType%3aA%29

The oil pressure sender looks right, but by the title, it's a switch that just lights a light. When you get one, you need to specify that it's for a gauge. Most parts stores will have what you need...

Re: Cluster swap help

ok, so since I have the 2 wire connector, how do I go from the stock 2 wires to the new 1? put them together?

Also, where is the oil pressure sensor going to be located?

Thanks much!

Re: Cluster swap help

Oil psi sender will either be at the back of the intake or down by the oil filter.

Re: Cluster swap help

Re: Cluster swap help

ok, here's what I've found for the Oil switch.
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...PSESWAMS_____#

My problem is, NO ONE has the connector for it. All the parts stores are saying 3-5 days before they can get it in

Re: Cluster swap help

All you need is a simple wire connector that slides on it. Only difference with an actual connector will be that it has a rubber cover on it.

Re: Cluster swap help

ok, we're good to go....kind of.... I got the cluster swapped out, I figured that what was holding me up was the 2 10mm nuts, then the fact that I don't have tilt steering wheel made it real hard to get in and out.

Now i have an issue, the speedometer starts @ (won't go below) 15mph, so if I'm going 50mph it'll show 65mph. any ideas? also, how soon do I need to replace the 2 senders/sensors? I was just gonna be careful and not drive too hard till I replace them.

Will a V6 115 speedometer work the same on a V8?

Re: Cluster swap help

Did someone put any overlays on the gauges, as in they took the needles off?

Re: Cluster swap help

You may find some useful info about senders/sensors and wiring below:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/cool...re-sender.html

Is the cable itself seated correctly in the cluster and have you snapped the speedo connector securely in place?

Re: Cluster swap help

Ok speedo is working properly... I think. I just pulled the needle of and put it on right where the little line is below the 5 mph line and now its right for what I can tell. Now I have to replace some of the lights in the cluster.

As far as the temp sender, I thought that was the thing on the water neck, but apparently its on the drivers side of the block, can anyone tell me exactly where it is?
