Vats with no computer?

Vats with no computer?
I have an 89 formula with a 383 about to be put in it. Its carbureated so I removed the computer and its wiring. Will I have to do anything to get the vats system to let me start it?

without the ECM the vats will have no purpose, therefore not hinder your drivability.

Re: Vats with no computer?
Naw, what happens is the VATS module checks for resistance in the key, and sends that info to the ECM. Without the ECM the VATS just checks resistance in the key, it may be a good idea to unplug it, but even if you left it plugged in. it has little to nothing to do with teh actual ignition process, what happens is the ECM doesnt get a response from VATS saying good to go and it goes into shut down mode in about 5 seconds.

Re: Vats with no computer?
What about the starter interrupt relay controlled by VATS?

Re: Vats with no computer?
My Vats was not reading any key period, and I could start it just fine, just died in ~5 seconds. any starter Int. relay can be bypassed relatively easy.

Exactly ;
but you FORGOT to mention that little fact when you stated
"the vats will have no purpose"
OP could be forgiven for thinking's his engine will start straight up if he removes the VATS module
So the relay was obviously bypassed
Rather pointless then

Re: Vats with no computer?
I'm not planning on removing the vats module, but i just removed the computer and its wiring to the engine bay. I know the vats sends a signal to the computer to cut off injectors, but i shouldn't have to worry about that since i'm carburated. The only part i'm worried about is the starter interrupt relay, and if thats affected by the removal of the computer at all.

Re: Vats with no computer?
As long as you leave the starter interrupt relay and wiring alone. and don't remove the vats module, and the key and ignition is OK then it should engage the starter.

Re: Vats with no computer?
However
given the problems VATS presents with age ( several times a week on here guys seeking to remove it because it is giving problems )
and the fact that it is now doing nothing for theft protection now you have a carb ( starter easily hotwired )
I would suggest doing the starter bypass to eliminate VATS completely from future problems and install a hidden kill switch for the ignition or fuel pump ( if using elec pump )
