Voltage gauge reading at 18 volts!

Ok here we go... I bought my 1990 IROC almost a year ago, and it's completely stock. The. Volt meter pegs out in the red zone at 18 volts, and it will move back and forth when the blinkers are being used. What's is causing my voltage to be this high. I never really cared before, but I'm gonna start running out of town a lot and do not want to get stranded. And yes it's been running like this the whole year I'm been driving it, and it's my everyday driver. Bad stock volt gauge? I would I test the alternator?

Measure the voltage with a test instrument.

Re: Voltage gauge reading at 18 volts!

1. Remove alternator
2. Bring to autozone
3. Get alternator tested
4. Find out it is bad
5. Buy new alternator
6. Profit

Check the regulator sense wire at the alternator.

Alright, this is my first time messing with a serpentine belt, and how do I get it off?! I mess with with a silver belt tensioner that had a torx fitting. That didn't do anything the torx bolt was coming out. So then I messed with the pulley right under the belt tensioner they bolted together, it has a 1/2 bolt head on, so I wrenched up to that and that bolt started coming out too. What am I sopposex to do?

It's been a while, IIRC, square hole- ratchet will fit. Don't recall if it's 1/2 inch drive..?...

PS-
The square that's offset to the right on the tensioner.

You don't undo anything.
You put a long 1/2" breaker bar into the square hole in the tensioner and lever against the spring in the tensioner
until the belt is loose enough to get off the pulley
