Ok i gott an 85 Z that origanilly had the LG4 in it and bought it w/o a motor in it... i just putt a 5-speed 355 with a non comp controlled carb and non cpu controlled HEI distrubutor... i also took out all the AC stuff and all the emissions stuff is no longer there either... so basically i dont think i need the CPU or ECM anymore do i? and i have a ****t load of wires layin around on my new motor and i have NO CLUE where any of them go even with a diagram... so how could i gett rid of the harness and still be able to gett it running and have the power to the car work right.. i already searched the board and didnt find much very helpfull... so can anyone who has done this give me a detailed account of what to do... kinda step by step so i can have the car running by next weekend??:hail:

I'm pretty sure you still need your CPU, it has to do with things other than just your engine. like any power options, most electronics dash lights, etc.and i suppose your transmission if its automatic

What the ECM controled in my '86 Z was the torque converter lock up, the carb, and dist. The gauges still work. The power windows still work too. So just the dist, TC, and carb.

To take the ECM harness out is simple. Follow the harness threw the pass. side fender. Get on the inside of the car on the pass. side and take off the kick panel and the cover under the dash. Unplug the ECM, and take out that pain in the a$$ plug on the inner fender. Then pull out the harness threw the engine bay.

First off, you do not need the ECM. It does not control any of the power options in the car. It used to control the carb., dist., and the TC lock-up on your car. Which you already said that you have the non-CC dist. and carb, so the last thing (TC lock-up) will not be that big of a thing.

Take out the old wiring harness as stated above, but leave the Transmission plug still intact. You will need this to Fab a switch to manually lock-up the TC. There is a Tech. article on this if you need it.

Also if you have electric fans, make sure you dont delete, ie. cut the wire that supplys power to it or them.

Ok well my car has a 5-speed so i wont need anything for for a TC... but what about the neutral-start plug?? AND i heard that if u ripp out the harness and CPU then it can be easily replaced by like a MSD 6AL box?? supposedly u can run like 6 wires off of it to re-wire the stuff in the engine bay (motor, ignition, dist, starter, battery) to make everythin work right??

With a 5 speed, to make the car work, all you need is a Non-Computer Controlled (or Non-CC) Carburetor and Distributor, and your set. That is all the computer controls, NO it does not affect the neutral start plug, that's wired independent of the computer.
