Re: 9 bolt 3 series carrier and gear set

I have a 9 bolt rear with a 3:27 posi you can have for $200 if you can pick it up, I am about 45 minutes from Danbury. If not I will sell the center section and gears for $200 shipped. Rear comes complete but the calipers are stuck from sitting, rotors should be ok with a cleanup. Just pulled from an 88 T/A.

drptop70ss,
I already have have the housing, but are the axels the same for the 2 series and 3 series carriers. The rear is already disc brake. Interested in center section and gears only. How many miles? Condition of posi? etc.

Re: 9 bolt 3 series carrier and gear set

Normally the axles will be the same, you would just have a spare set if you got the whole rear. The car had 160K on it but I did have 3 or 4 receipts for the car that were for the gear oil being changed so it looks like it was taken care of. The car had no brakes so the posi is untested other than a few short burnouts in the yard when I got it home to make sure both wheels spun but I could nto test it on the road.

160K seems kind of high on the mileage. Do you know how the donor car was driven? Didn't really want to rebuild the whole unit.

Email me at Javelin_3@hotmail.com for additional info

Re: 9 bolt 3 series carrier and gear set

Remember these cars are almost 20 years old, so I would consider over 150K to be the norm. could easily lie and say the car had 80K but that isnt the case. Like I said I had receipts for 3 or 4 gear oil changes which is more than most rears get. Good luck in your search. Possibly a 4th gen rear would have lower milage, I have a couple of them but I do not want to break them up.

Re: 9 bolt 3 series carrier and gear set

Basically just asking how the car was driven, if you don't know thats fine. I know that most of these cars are going to have high mileage. Everyone does the occasional burnout, but if it has been raced alot and beat on all the time I don't want it.

Re: 9 bolt 3 series carrier and gear set

No way to know, I didnt buy it new, but you can be sure nobody buys a trans am to drive to church on sunday FWIW I had a folder full of receipts for the car, the owner did no work on it and always paid to have it serviced, so it was a normal driven car IMO. Bottom line is I am not going to claim it is something it isnt, it is a 9 bolt posi 3:27 rear from a rusted out 88 trans am, that is really all I have for history on it, and it is priced accordingly. About all you can do with a rear out of the car is inspect the ring gear teeth and check for excessive backlash in the gears. That gives an idea of gear condition but there is no way to test the posi out of the car that I know of unless there is a breakaway torque spec.

Re: 9 bolt 3 series carrier and gear set

$200 for center section and shipping right? One more question. Do you know if the 3.27 unit will fit into the 2.77 housing. If it does I will take it off your hands.

Re: 9 bolt 3 series carrier and gear set

It will fit fine, normally the difference in carriers is the thickness of the mounting surface for the ring gear. Send me an email if you are interested in it, drptop70ssATaol.com and I will open the rear on Tuesday and get pictures and a look at the gears. I have already checked the backlash and it was good. I wont sell the parts unless all looks good, $200 shipped.
