There was no L98 in 1985.The stock ecm for an 85 will be no good. You will need an 86-89 (165)ecm for an maf setup or a 90-92 (730)ecm for speed density setup.I have a 165 ecm with a stock L98 5.7 prom that I would sell for 100 dollars+shipping
I'm gonna be buying a 350 SBC out of a 72 pickup and swap the TPI intake from my 305 and toss in an L98 cam.
If this will work for my application, I'll take it.
you won't be able to put a factory L98 cam into that block. that block uses flat tappet lifters and a factory L98 cam uses roller lifters. also you will need bigger injectors as well as the MAF sensor for the '86-'89 motor because if i'm not mistaken, the '85 is a different MAF type(digital vs. analog)
Hold the phone. What won't work? If I just spent all the money for this swap and I've been told wrong, I'm gonna be highly pissed.
Heres what I've bought.
- Comp Cams Flat Tappet 12-338-4 camshaft
- Comp Cams Flat Tappet hydraulic lifters
- PROM from an 85 L98 corvette.
- Denso IT16 iridium spark plugs
- New flat tappet pushrods
- 350 Knock sensor
The only issue is the injectors. I can't afford #24 injectors for about a month and I know that the stock 305 ones will make the engine run lean. Can this actually damage the engine or just choke It's power?

your parts are very much compatible with the L98 NON-ROLLER block. i ran my 350 .040 over for about 4 weeks now on my stock #19's. you will be ok til you can afford bigger injectors im installing my 24'/s tommorrow. i only got a LEAN O2 reading when i jumped on it.
they only made L98 for a year or two(in the vette's) before going to roller cams. when you say L98 on this board, most assume roller cam/block since that was the common 5.7 in these cars used with tpi set-ups.
the flat tappet cam you have will work in the block you are using. if you have the prom from a '85 vette(you didn't mention it before) then use it instead of converting to the '165 stuff and you won't need another MAF sensor.
