Parting out 1989 IROC-Z LS1/T56 Conversion

After some changes in my life, I have come to a dead end on my 89 IROC-Z LS1 project, and am unable to finish it.

I am trying to decide if I want to sell it whole or part it out.

As it sits, the car is not in running condition. It needs wiring done along with the fuel and cooling issues sorted out. I would say the project is 70% complete.

I am really trying to sell this whole.

Body is pretty straight, has no major dents in it. Needs a paint job. I bought an SS hood for it and a GFX set from a 91 Z28 to slap on there, but have not taken delivery of it yet. I will try to sell these with the car. The stock hood and GFX are still on the car. It's up to the buyer.

T-tops
Power Windows
Power Hatch

Interior:
It was stripped to make way for the 4th gen interior. I have buyers for the 2000 SS Camaro dash, the seats and the console. However, if someone would like to buy this car whole, I will gladly include as much of the 4th gen interior as I can pry away from the prospective buyers.

Parts List
150,963.3 miles on body
55,565 miles on LS1/T56 out of 1999 Camaro Z28
Drivetrain comes with harness, PCM, underhood harness and under-dash harness out of a 99 Z28.

Re: Parting out 1989 IROC-Z LS1/T56 Conversion

An update for this thread is way overdue; sorry about that gents.

4th Gen interior is now gone. I'll drop the price to $5000.

Someone asked me about how true the mileage on the drivetrain itself is. I can verify that with the odometer reading I got out of the donor car before I tore it out. I was not able to hear the engine run though, in hindsight I should have started it up, but there was no radiator hooked up and I didn't know the condition of the gas in the tank, so I was hesitant.

However, the guy who sold me the donor car did say he did move the car under its own power to where it was parked, and that was not too long before I bought it.

Re: Parting out 1989 IROC-Z LS1/T56 Conversion

I might as well part this out.

I already have a local buyer for the drivetrain.

Pieces are all brand new unless otherwise specified. Suspension and tubular component colors are BLACK unless otherwise noted.

As far as the hood and GFX are concerned, I still haven't taken delivery of these pieces yet, and I'm actually trying to get my money back from the guy.

Buyer pays shipping, coming out of area code 84401. My preferred method of payment is PayPal. Prices listed below are FIRM. These are the major pieces off the car that I'm selling, and are sold as-is, however they are all pretty new with 0 miles on them. For future reference, I don't get on here very often and have a busy schedule, so I may take awhile to respond for PM's and emails. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Looking for these but think that $700 is too high, aren't there any cheaper LS1 Conversion Headers?

You can pick up Long Tubes for 4th Gen LS1 for $450 plus Shipping. I don't understand why the conversion header has to be so expensive.

I am not complaining about your price, there has to be a solution other then spending 7-800 on headers alone.

It's because they are stainless. The hooker long tubes for the tradition Gen I small block cost 530 alone, uncoated. A specialty stainless steel header is going to cost you, but Stainless = awesome.

700-800 is cheap for 3rd gen LS1 conversion headers. new you can expect to pay upwards of a grand. Theres only a few companies making them, so cut the guy a break hes being pretty reasonable on unused parts

There is no way LS1 f-body headers will work. The primary's hit off the a-arm mounts, then the collectors dump into the frame. Not going to work without expensive modification

Re: Parting out 1989 IROC-Z LS1/T56 Conversion

I know man, I know. This really is hurting me pretty bad parting out my baby I've had for 5 years - it's been under the knife for over 2. I'm a 23 year old college student who's trying to start a new life, and this thing has just been an unsatisfying money pit that has run into problem after problem after problem. I spent most of a year's worth of income and what little time I had trying to build it, and it just keeps kicking me in the nuts when I'm down. It needs alot to be "finished."

Now I've got my ex hounding me to keep it, saying I'll regret it and everything else, and how disappointed I'll be in the future when I have a 16 year old son who won't be getting a badass IROC like I've always dreamed of. She tells me to keep it until I'm ready. But when will that be? Sad thing is, as much as I hate to say it - she's right.

I'm so torn, I really really am. What would the rest of you guys do if you were in my situation?

What color are the a-arms? I'm interested.

Geez man, you should probably keep it unless you just desperately need the money since you're losing money by selling everything.

personally im sort of in a similiar boat as you. same age, same time constraints, same money pit. but i'm single! lol i recently had a house fire and am just now getting things together. I haven't even got to move back into the house yet that comes next week hopefully! (crosses fingers) your call though. if you don't think you'll ever do anything with it because you dont have the time i'd give someone else a chance with parts. my dad had a 79 Z that he thought he'd do something with then i happened when he was 17. he sold it to a buddy of his and with luck his buddy still had it and i bought it back from him in worse shape than it was before.... but now 20 years later he doesnt have any renewed interest in it.

btw does the kmember have the frame mounts on it?

Re: Parting out 1989 IROC-Z LS1/T56 Conversion

Yeah I've got so many thoughts going through my head right now. I have a 98 Z28 that's cammed and has bolt ons and it's definitely a fun car, but it just doesn't fill the void, and I honestly am still pretty attached to the IROC. I could sell the Z and use that to dump money into the IROC, but who knows how far I'll get and when I'll run out of steam. It is such a huge gamble to take any route I go. I apologize to everybody who's wanting parts but I'm stalling. It's just that this is a pretty huge decision that I've gotta live with.

There is another guy who's a couple hours away who's interested in the whole car. I'll see what his thoughts are when he comes up to see it. I have a lot of pondering to do in the meantime.

What do you mean by the frame mounts?

Oh, lol. By that I meant she's telling me about the possibility that I'd have a son someday with nothing cool to pass down like I had wanted to. Still single, no kids over here, haha. She's right though, she knows me too well. I know I'd be regretting selling this thing like she said. Situation with her is another story and adds to the confusion. Seems like I'm losing both the loves in my life, and I'm trying to start over in some way. I have a lot of thinking to do in the meantime, and I guess I gotta do whatever will allow me to live with myself.

I myself have an 02 Z28 and your right after you've had and loved a 3rd gen a 4th gen just doesn't feel right. Granted i like the 4th gen interior alot better and the creature comforts seem to be more efficient which is why i'm swapping the
interior and drivetrain into a 3rd gen i just love the 3rd gen body style.

What I would have liked is to build a car with me dad not just be handed one. I'm trying to get him fired up with his old car telling him about all the new technology that has been introduced for performance since the late 80's when he was into muscle cars. my little brother (11) loves going and helping me work on cars. so if i can get my dad interested all 3 of us working on it would be a blast!

let me know when you decide if all goes well i may be able to grab a few other things from you i want.

Just keep it man. You will regret selling it. I have been dragging mine around for 7 years now. Always knew I would get to it. Me and my 2 sons will be cruising in this years Hot Rod Power Tour. If you believe you will regret it keep it, you are almost there.

Re: Parting out 1989 IROC-Z LS1/T56 Conversion

This is just my 2 cents here, but I had/have a similar dilemma. I'm 19 in college and now have 2 fbody projects along with 3 other vehicles all of which sit at my parents house except for the IROC which is in storage. This summer i found out the car that i couldn't live without had been in a couple wrecks and needed 700 in frame work and even after wasn't completely right. Drives great but the driverside wheel doesn't and probably never will sit properly in the well. Then I got another kick in the ball when she had to take a 160 mile trip home from school on a flat bed due to major electrical gremlins. But the worst was pulling up the carpet and a good chunk of the passenger side floorpan with it. Guess the previous owner didn't think a leaky heater core was a time sensative fix. So I stewed and sulked about it for a couple days and eventually wound up buying another car from a member here. So in 2 years when I graduate I'll have my monster camaro finished and can pull the IROC off the road for all the TLC it needs. So what I'm getting at here is it you already have a fast 4th, maybe you should keep this one but do something a little more mild. Like a 350, T5 combo with stock suspension that way could could potentially give it to a 16 year old farther on down the line. But don't sell it if you think you might regret it cause you will in the end. On a side note if you want to sell the UMI rear suspension stuff I'll be more than happy to give you what your asking for it. Good luck with both the camaro and let me know if you decide to sell the parts

Re: Parting out 1989 IROC-Z LS1/T56 Conversion

Ok gents, I've finally come to a decision. I'll be keeping the car, putting it away for awhile. It would really be foolish of me to get rid of it after so much has been invested, and now I do have the resources to keep it and put it away until a later date when I can pay attention to it; as I didn't have that before.

Thanks for all the interest.
