I was looking at the picts of the bottom end and it is hard to see but the parting line on the crank looks like it is a forged. If you don't know for sure photo the parting line on the crank journals(spelling?) cast are narrow and forged are wide.
I also have 3 400 sbc with 2 freeze plugs 1 817, 2 509 blocks. both 509 are virgins.
I've read the some probuilders think it is possiable that some bowtie blocks left GM as 509 400 prototypes
I would part out if the whole motor would be gone.
You should put together a list with prices, and once you get to a threshold of people wanting the parts, start collecting moneys and ship them out.
That's how I usually part out cars. I'll buy the car, and post it for sale in one thread. In another I'll list it for parting out. If I get interest on a majority of the big ticket items, it gets parted.
It usually gets parted anyway because nobody buys cars unless they are $500 and run great.
There is still a handful of things I need for my 412, so I'd be interested in the list as well.
Not sold yet, huh? Hmm, maybe price is a tad to high, I don't know, but after over a year of not being sold, I'm assuming that the price is too high or something.

His prices I'm sure are based on what he paid for the stuff when he put the motor together. It's not his fault people can get AFR heads for $1300 now.
$1500 for the shortblock is a pretty good deal I think.
Yeah, I understand that, but what I'm saying is that over time, the value of this stuff does go down. Before long, small block chevy stuff will be worthless with the way the LSX crowd is taking over. I know that my buddy got a fully built engine from T&L engine development for around 4K. I don't know all the details but he beats the crap out of the car and revs the ever-living doo doo out of it. 7,000 rpm shifts can't be good.
Anyway, if it doesn't sell on craigslist or on here, I'd say lower the price a bit and hope for the best.

Well, when that happens I'll happily buy all that worthless SBC stuff.
Yeah, I got a really bogus email about how my asking price of $450 for 3 complete TPI's was way to high because "old chevy stuff is worthless" but I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to buying all this "worthless stuff". I like the old school stuff. Hopefully someone will buy this 406, at least the short block. I could understand if the heads don't sell, but come on, the shortblock is worth the $1500. What gives?
It depends what you are looking for to buy. I live in a big city and able to get parts cheap because of the economy. What do you need exactly? PM me so not to jack this thread. Oh and can I boost my bid to $205? I want there to be a little margin so no one out bids me too quick!
How much were you looking to get for the intake, if you sold it separate?
The heads have a Felpro 1206 port, so I'm assuming the manifold was a 1206 as well?

Im sure it is otherwise I would have a problem. I didnt check. The builder put the motor together and im sure he matched what had to be matched to assemble the entire thing.
I got a PM from another member saying that he wants $2800, so I'm out, I thought we were bidding on the engine trying to help him sell it after him having it over a year. Basically he wants people to keep bidding on it until it gets to his selling price, there is no end to the bidding, so therefore, I'm out. If the message I received is not true, then blown 346 can correct me if I'm wrong.
I find it funny that you and your buddy are going back and forth about the engine.
If you think Im going to sell the entire motor for $500 or even $1000 you are wrong. Im not going to lose that much on it. Like I said before I will keep it if I absolutly have to. Otherwise it wil stay for sale. I dont honestly think that $2,800 for the whole thing is a bad deal.
I find it funny that you wanted a bid to happen and now you still have a set price. I now it seems like a rip but did it ever occur to you that you have had this on here for over a year and it hasn't sold? I think the first part of this post f'd it up. I could easily take a stock 400 and say there is such and such on the inside but there isn't. There wasn't documentation so it kind of is a shot in the dark. I don't know, that's what I was thinking and maybe other people can chime in why they don't bid.
And racing geek, you outbid me, so if he decides to take whatever the highest bid is, you would win. Although you might want to think about offering at the very least $2500.
With the way the economy is right now, unemployment at over 20% in some regions, and gold creeping up to $1350 per ounce, I can't see alot of people wanting an engine that costs literally two or maybe three months of pay. There are some of us that have a secure job and we know that we could never lose it, like me, and work for a place that could never go out of business but then it's us that already have a hot engine in our car already. I hope you do sell the engine, and I hope you get a decent amount for it, but I would start posting it on alot of other places.
ok, please understand im not wanting to jack the thread here as im not.
But what he is asking is a fair price for the motor. Have you priced engines on ebay lately? If not, take a look around. The bid idea was mine and mine only.
Not sure if the mods would even appreciate bidding on here. None the less,
I thought it MIGHT be a great idea. Why not? he certainly does not have to take the last bid if he don't want to. Ill bid $501.00 which is my last offer. I know he wont take it, but it will least get the numbers up there. If he does take it,
Ill borrow the money from somewhere or sell something to get it.
Blown 346: Good luck with your sale and feel free to tell people to stop bidding at anytime. Its your thread post and your engine. Yall have a happy new year!
