Re: Vortec 062 heads LOOK Free shipping!

the problem is the intake. anything after 93 uses heads that will not bolt up to our tpi. look at the bolt pattern on the intake side. it will not match up with ours. try a 4th gen board i bet they will be on it like bees on honey. this is stock exhaust manifold input. 6 ourside bolts and 72 degrees for the two inside bolts, plus a pass through. while you can get aftermarket parts to make a pass through drilling heads is a pain.
im enclosing a pic so you will see what i mean. i had the person that sold them to me show me the center which is why his fingers are pointing to it. this is from a 91 tpi.
just a suggestion.

The Heads are good for a scoggindicky tpi intake or a vortec Stealthram.

Re: Vortec 062 heads LOOK Free shipping!

Also for ANYBODY that simply wants a good set of heads for little money
"YES", TPI is a popular stock setup on 3rd gens and as said above you can buy a Vortec specific base manifold (outrageous in price ) but there is still plenty of people who are either running a carb, or ditching the TPI in order to run a carb which dollar for dollar can support better numbers than TPI. Now guys, before I get flamed, I must admit that I run TPI and I love it for not only it's looks, but also it performs good for a daily driver. But lets face it, TPI definately isn't a very cheap setup to modify. Sorry for the novel, but I think that TPI being the more popular stock system has little to do with these heads not selling right now. It may have more to do with that fat guy in the red suit that has to squeeze his a$$ down the chimney here in a week
JMHO
Kevin, good luck with the sale and thanks for the cam.

Hmmm, that post is full of errors...... these heads do not fit the LT1s in the fourth gens. LT1s do not have water crossovers in the intake at all. They also have the wrong intake bolt pattern. As for the "center bolts at 72 degrees", Vortecs do not have center bolts at all, only the 8 outside bolts. Check out pic #1. Also, the intake ports are raised .100 for better flow. TPI intakes will not cover the tops of these ports. The second pic shows the lack of coverage of the ports by traditional intakes. THese are the best flowing box-stock heads that GM produced. Yes, you do have to have a Vortec-specific intake manifold, but these intakes are available. I think that these are a great deal at $300 shipped. The heads are heavy and will cost between $50 and $100 to ship.

THanks for the guys!

Kevin

Re: Vortec 062 heads LOOK Free shipping!

why would you quote me and talk about the heads not working for stock 3rd gen stuff?
isn't that what i said?
97 is 4th gen stuff.
the only vortec heads we can use with our tpi setup is aftermarket that are made for pre 93 imput. edelbrock sells them and they are expensive.
i also understand that some aftermarket are made with dual bolt patterns but i have never seen them. i sure would like to see something less expensive than edelbrock and not have to buy chinese to get them.
in any event they will not work on 3rd gen unless you are no longer running 3rd gen fuel delivery systems.
and i was right about the degrees. 90 on the outside and 72 on the inside.

tony what are you talking about 96+ is vortec head
you may be thinking about "centerbolt" heads they have the 87-95 bolt pattern but they are NOT vortec heads
stock 3rd gen intakes will not fit 96+ vortec heads but they make both a Tbi vortec intake and a Tpi vortec intake both intakes are not cheap but cost of the intake and heads new is still less then most aftermarket heads

Seriously, get a clue. You're ruining this poor guys for sale add with very poor information. Next time you're inclined to open your trap, atleast be sure the info if even in the same area code of the truth.

Thanks Arrow, I seriously assumed that everyone knew what the 062 Vortec heads were. These heads came on 1996-1999 fullsize GM trucks, not on the f or y bodies. The ports are patterned after the LT1 intake and exhaust ports. These flow more cfm than any other out of the box GM iron heads. These heads can be used on any 1955-2002 GEN 1 small block, not the LT1s (GEN 2) or LS1s (GEN 3). These heads do require the use of a intake manifold with the Vortec bolt pattern. Edelbock and others make both dedicated intakes for the TPI and TBI as well as carbureted. This is a very oversimplified description of the heads. There is ALOT of information on the net, too much to list it all here, use google.... Here is a very good article for Tony and anyone else that needs good info about the VORTEC heads being used with TPI. http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/te...ead/index.html

Back to the ad, these heads are still for sale.

wow, that was interesting.... also for anyone interested these heads can support upwards of 400hp in stock form and there is a spring and retainer kit made by crane that allows .550 lift safely with no machining. Awesome heads. Merry Christmas

Re: Vortec 062 heads LOOK Free shipping!

Since this thread has been a little de-railed, lets consider this a BUMP....
Technically, Tony is somewhat correct(in one regard, most of everything else is way off) in saying that Vortec heads have been aroung before 96. I will admit that I am not an expert, but GM has refered to heads as being Vortec heads since the mid-late 80's. Those heads are not a good performing head by any means though.
When the modern day car guy wants to buy a set of "Vortec" heads, these heads for sale in this thread are the heads they are after. I have a set, and eventually they will be going into a 3rd gen carb setup and I am sure there is not only a million other 3rd gens out there running them, but a trillion other hot rod cars/trucks in general.
Did I mention "BUMP"

Sorry I'm broke at the moment too because of christmas but this is a very good deal for these heads. I bought the same exact heads for $200 and drove an hour to get them.

After bolting them on, my malibu was like a whole different car.
