They are GM gears and will only fit a 3 series carrier.

Yes, the 3.42 gears were originally in the same car that the carrier came out of. They were replaced for 4.10's .

Right, the 3.42's are in a gear box but they originally were on the posi before the gears were swapped in the car. No pics of the gears but I do have one of the posi some where.

The busted gear is what is left of the 4.10's that were in the car.

Will this fit a 1998 S10? In most cases, I wouldn't ask but to be honest, I've never seen a posi case with the ring gear attached in the back. Is that what you are calling a "paddel". What is it's function?

Any damage to the posi when the gear broke? Did any fragments make it inside the unit?

Yes it will work in your s-10. The gear on the carrier is just a reluctor ring that was used on the 4th gens for ABS. The paddel is what the carrier uses instead of a cross pin. It slides in the opening that you can see in the pic. No damage to the carrier that
i see. The car busted the gears at the line so it wasnt driven after that. Im sure some pieces made in in the carrier but I wouldnt be afraid to run it by any means.
