Re: GM Steering Shaft Upgrade

Great Devin, glad your happy with it.
I do my best to ship the same day as i hate buying something then it doesn't ship until 3 days later only to receive it on Monday and have to wait another week to install something.
I use USPS priority mail, it usually takes 2 days, 3 to some that are in more rural areas.

The also paint the inner shaft completely so once installed there is no bare metal exposed to rust.

I have more ready to ship.

PM me if you want one.

PM me if you want one, I sell these on 7 different boards so they go fast.

Jeep Shaft:
This is what they look like after i separate and clean them.
Compare this pic to the 3rd, you will see where i weld them to eliminate any slippage.

I clean the threads on both the shaft and bolts.

I carefully split and remove the plastic bushings and ship at least 1 with each shaft so they can be put back on after all the test fitting is done and your ready for the final install. I do this so it makes it easier to install and so they don't get destroyed during the prep process. I also clean the inner part of the shaft with a wire brush and grease it before shipping.

GM Shaft:
I do all the same prep to these as i do to the Jeep Shaft plus i clock them 90 degrees and re-weld them so they bolt right in.

The one on the top is the Rubber GM Shaft, the bottom one is the Solid GM Shaft
The theory is the rubber helps to reduce the road vibration in the steering wheel but if that was the case then why would some have it and some not. From what i can tell only 1 year came with the rubber, all the rest were solid.

Tired of all the slop in your steering due to a worn out rag joint?
Need more room for headers?
These shafts are a huge improvment in looks and steering feel.

$70 shipped to the states.

Any benefit from ones with rubber isolator? Also, is it cheaper to get one so that it can be powder coated? And any idea how well it works with a 4th gen column?

Re: GM Steering Shaft Upgrade

The theory is the rubber isolator helps absorb some of the road niose in the steering wheel but i never noticed a difference. If you going to powder coat it i would not recommend the rubber as it might soften during the baking process. While doing the prep i strip all the grease so if i sent it unpainted it may rust before you get it coated.
If you want one and are going to get it coated let me know ASAP and i will only put enough paint on it to prevent rust that way it will be easier to take back to bare metal.

Not sure about the 4th gen column but i believe its still the 1" "D" end so it should work.

Re: GM Steering Shaft Upgrade

I got mine installed today. Very nice piece. Steering should be much tighter now. I'll find out once the engine goes back in in a few weeks.

On another note. Earlier this year I put a early 4th gen air bag wheel in my 91 (my wheel was trashed) I didnt have my puller with me at the pick-a-part yard so I grabbed the whole column. I only used the wheel and put the 4th gen column in the corner of my garage. I figured I'd just grab the column bushing from that since my original is pretty sloppy and worn. I was surpised to find out that the 4th gen column actually has a bearing and not a plastic bushing. I swear I've read on here that the 4th gens used a plastic bushing too...but unless somebody did the Astro bearing upgrade to this 4th gen column...which is doubtful...then some of the 4th gen cars do actually have the metal bearing.

My column is out,... fixing damage from a failed hot wire attempt... My upper coupling seems like its in pieces and grease is everywhere around whatever boot is left...
I guess I'm ready for the solid GM shaft and bearing upgrades.

Great looking piece. Night and day the difference! More clearance around headers too. I have pics but not sure how to load from phone. Quality packaging, lightening shipping. Must have item for any car regardless of performance level. Very minimal harshness. Barely noticeable.

Others have used it.
You have to clean, sand the steering column end for it to slide on.
It has been discussed early in the thread.

I got 2 more batches of shafts.

PM me if you want one.

Re: GM Steering Shaft Upgrade

I was just letting you know. I tried and the bearing would not even try to fit on the shaft. then I looked it up and there's a thread referencing this problem saying you have to dremel down the shaft to make it fit. The plastic retainer is the only piece that fits. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/susp...teering-2.html
