Many LT1 questions

Before I get started I would like to say that I DID DO A SEARCH and have read about the LT1 swap for a few hours. My questions I have now have not been found in any posts.

Question #1...

will the 96 LT1 OBDII set a engine code if I do not hook up the A.I.R. pump? (i.e. does the pump feed back info into the computer?)

Q #2...

I have a 92 camaro with VSS but am instaling the T56 that is coming with the 96 LT1, what do I have to do to calibrate this correctly, is there a gear list here for the T56 (I am going to run a 3.45 or 3.73 ratio)

Q #3...

If I get the key from the car that the engine came out of, will I have to worry about the VATS system? If I do not get it, can't I just put a resistor across the connector?

Q #4...

Will the LT4 hotcam be too much with the following mods?:
1.6 rollers
headers and SLP exhaust
52 mm throttle body
cowl induction ram air

Please help!!

Thanks

No it won't trip a code, but you may have other problems. Contact Howell. They know how to bypass all that crap including the VATS (answer to Q #3). I know a guy that put an LT1 in an 87 Chevy Pick-up and they did all that stuff for him. You'll have to do a search online to find out how to contact them.

Im going through a similiar process as you. Im installing a 96 LT1/4L60E in my 90 RS. What are you going to do with the engine harness? Im sending mine to Dana at LT1350.com . He's going to weed out the crap I dont need, label everything, install any needed relays, bypass the 96 obdII vats in the harness, and send it back to me for $250. Not a bad deal if you ask me comparing that to Painless kit.

Custom programming could solve a few of your problems, like VATS and your speedometer calibration.

I read that they can program OBD-2 systems now (not sure who does it now though). If not you can convert to OBD-1.

Q1. I dont think the computer reads anything from the AIR pump, I think its just an on/off signal. not 100% sure though

Q2. You mean 3.42's? If you use those, everything should be alright since those were the stock gears in Z28's. still not real clear how the speed hooks up though, so no help there.

Q3. Even if you get the key, you will still have to swap out the VATS module. it is a one-time programmable module, so the one in the car will only read the key you have. Get a new module, use your key, and it will program itself the first time you try to start it.

Q4. Depends on what you mean by too much. I put the Hotcam into a stock LT1 with the stock computer and ran it like that just fine for about 6 months. didnt have any problems. Once I got my current setup I got a program from pcmforless.com, although I havent been too impressed with it. I hope to get it dyno tuned sometime soon.

Any other questions, just ask. There are a lot of us on here that have done the swap, and any of us can probably answer most questions you've got. good luck on your swap.

Tristan

*EDIT: Forgot about the OBD-II, you will absolutely have to get a program for the cam and rockers, OBD-II is crap in my opinion as far as mods go, if you can, I dont think its all that hard to convert to OBD-1. you might be better off in the long run depending on what your plans for the car are.

No not 3.42, 3.45

I have a 9 bolt rear end, and that is the closest ratio I can get to 3.42

Thanks guys, you really helped.

I would not mind making a tech article documenting my swap for the board, somebody let me know who to contact please.

To convert to OBD1 all you need is the computer (94-95) and a knock sensor.

My bad, I didn't think about that.

See, I knew it wasnt too hard.

As far as a tech article, a bunch of us a while back talked about putting together each of our experiences and making an article. Maybe now sounds like a good time. I think with the number of people that have done the swap, all possibilities have been covered, meaning we could put together one helluva swap guide.

I wish you would hehe. I find the lack of detailed info on the net for thirdgen LT1 swaps. I have a 96 LT1/4L60E waiting to be put in now. My harness is sent off getting reworked now. Anyone have detailed wiring info for a 90RS LO3? Wiring info for 96 would be handy to have too.

I haven't done my swap yet, but I'm picking up the car next week thats getting my LT1. I have been messing with LT1s since early 95 (owned three 4th gens, a 94, a 95 (both Z28s), and a 97 SS), so I'd say I'm fairly knowledgable about them. Both my car and my girlfriend's (Redraif) will be getting LT1 383s. We're writing tech articles on everything we do now, so within 6 months I should have an in-depth "manual", with pictures, on how to do an LT1 swap in a 3rd gen.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (i.e. prove it) but our cars have OBD-I and the only 4th gen that had OBD-I was the 93 Camaros and F-Birds.

I may be mistaken though. Perhaps I'm thinking of the EPROM compared to a Flash PROM? But I thought OBD-II was called OBD-II because it was a Flash PROM?

Anyway, someone please show me some where I can learn more about this stuff. That way I'll know what NOT to do!!!!!

'94-95 is obd-I "flash" pcm ..some '95 cars had the OBD-II connector but are still OBD-I.

Best place to look for info is in the computer area of 4th gen msg boards.
