I was just wondering for the people that went to carb from TPI have you any regrets at all or happy that you switched. Plus can you use the 23 degree heads we hav on the 350 TPI to convert to carb or new heads needed? But please let me know your regrets
mmm, have two friends that did it, lots of regrets...about not doing it sooner. the heads will work fine, most of them don't flow great numbers, but they work.
my opinion is that TPI would make for better driveablity. if you go carb, yes, it will be cheaper, but im not thinking it will be as smooth on the streets. the TPI cars make a ton of torque, so get a nice setup ported and some decent heads.
Trickflow uses the 23* heads, some people dont like them, but trickflow does produce some great #s. i would get a set of edelrock heads ported at L&B (seen their work recently-----look great)and get a intake ported too. heck, then hit it with a 100 shot if you dont go cheap with hyperutic pistons, stayed forged.
PS, never caught you downtown, too bad! i like to win

The car that went out in a blaze of glory: 86 IROC, 350---99 crate motor----3.73s, t-tops, Edelbrock RPM intake, Vortec heads, Flowmaster cat-back, hooker headers, Holley Blue pump, Accell distributor, automatic w/shift kit, Holley 670 Avenger carb and K&N air filter! His thirdgen nickname------NevinKez....hes lazy, i do all the research for him..
im glad i went with a carb. more power, easier to work on. just lose the get in and go like tpi. carbs need tuning and maintence unlike FI...more torque with tpi? i think carbs make more power, HP and torque...
just FYI... 23* heads are "stock"... they have been the norm on SBCs since the 50s when the engine first came out.... the greater majority of intakes (both FI and carb) are for 23* heads.
I switched from TPI to carb and I am very happy with the results. However my car is mostly a strip car and I am not worried about driveability per se. I went from 041 heads and the TPI setup to Fastburns, 1.6 roller rockers, Victor Super Vortec intake, Demon 850DP and dropped 2 full seconds off my 1/4 mile et's. If you have a daily driver I would stick with EFI.
i wanna swith from to tpi to carb when i put a 385 in the car , I wanna loose all the extra wires and clutter , and put a cut out where the cat goes. I dont drive the car every day but i do go to car shows and want less clutter. If the carb is set up fine then you should have no problems with street drivability .
