Does the LT1 have the same stroking capabilities as the gen 1 small block chevy? Or could a LT1 be bored and stroked to a larger displacement than a 383?

They have some specially gond cranks that can turn an LT1 into a 396 or even a 409. The 409 is new to me so I don't know to much about it but I wouldn't go much bigger than a 396. A 383 would be the cheapest. Check out this link. They are leaders in the big inch LT1 market.

I personally would go 396.
I agree. Once you get past that there is a lot of material removed to allow for the larger crank clearances. This slightly weakens the block and once you past 396 you are making up to and over 600hp and you can use all the beef you can with the stock block at that point. I have never heard of a 422. Are you sure your not confusing this with the 422 LS1?
It was in an automotive magazine in the last 5 years. The guy was from TX and he had a "mild" and a "wild" engine built; both were for his LT1 powered Impala SS.

Wow. That would be really neat. I think I may vagly remember that. He must have went with a 4.060 bore and 4.07" stroke. Was that with a custom ground crank?
personally, i wouldnt build a 396 or a 409...sure youll get a few more cubes out of it, but what about the incresed side loading on the skirts, or longevity?
when i built my motor i set a 50,000+ mile goal...i want to get atleast 50 grand out of this motor..and i just dont think thats possible or plausible with a 396...id rather build a 383 and have it last 100,000 miles then go for 20 more cubes and have it last less then half as long...
