I have a 350 / 4 bolt main motor out of a '70 'vette. the casting number is 3970010. The casting number info I found lists a different # for '69 LT1s. did they only cast LT1s in 69? The data I have rates the 69 LT1 max HP at 350 and my motor at 370.

as I said the motor came out of a 1970 Corvette Stingray. no idea if it had LT1 badges or not. LT1s came in Z28s and vettes in '70 and '71 maybe more. the late model LT1s are based on the early 70s motor. The '70-1/2 LT1 Z28 split bumper is a very famous and sought after Camaro. My motor's casting number (3970010) was also the casting for the '68 327
alright thanks for clearin that up...the only lt1s i've heard of are the late model fuel injected ones...i'd kinda like to see an lt1 for a '69 z28...it might look good in my '69 z28...
ok...after doing a quick search here's a website i found... http://100megsfree4.com/corvette/ ...this site has a lot of corvette info and history...it shows the lt1 first available in the 70 vette...doesnt mention casting numbers...but has a lot of other info...hope this helps out somewhat...if i find anything else, i'll make sure to post it...here's one more link for ya...this should have what you want with the casting numbers... http://www.nastyz28.com/sbcmenu.html ...oh...and thanks again for the enlightening lesson on lt1s...

I have the same casting number (3970010) in my car right now, that number is actually probably one of the most popular blocks made. There were more of them than you or I could count. I believe they were made from 69-79. Made for car or truck
If it was a LT-1, it would have aluminum valve covers, a steel crank, 11:1 pistons, solid lifters, points-type distributor, Holley 4bbl, 010 block, 462 or 186 heads (double hump) and a few other things.
The LT1 was built from '70-72. After that, the 'good' 350 was the L82, and the lesser 350 was the L48.
Thanks for the info. I checked out the site with all the casting #s....It's pretty much told me the same thing I had already found. The interesting thing about this casting is that it is listed that Chevy put out a version with 370 hp.....and it's the same casting that was made into a 327 in '68. I was wondering if anyone knew what casting # was used for the '70 - '71 LT1s since mine was the original motor that came in a 1970 Corvette. I know that both Camaros and Corvettes came with LT1s in '70 and '71 but did they also come with non LT1 350s too?
Air Adam, Thanks! I thought it might be. I bought the motor from a good friend. It was sitting in his un finished 85 Z28 5 speed.I bought the whole car for spare parts for my vert. He used to work for a big mechanic shop in Clarksville TN and the owner is a close friend. The owner of the mechanic shop rebuilt the motor for him and gave him the info about it's source car( a '70 Corvette ). So I feel the info was very reliable. The motor does have double hump heads and the mid rise 4 barrel intake. the Distributor is not original. I have no idea about the lifters as I have not been into it yet....and it now has some cheap-o chrome valve covers. I was told it had a steel crank but I don't know if it was the stock crank or not. I think it's probably the LT1 and if it is I want to put some early LT1 fender badges on my '88
Originally posted by Mark P. I know that both Camaros and Corvettes came with LT1s in '70 and '71 but did they also come with non LT1 350s too?
Sure did... the Z/28 only came with the LT-1, but different 350s were available on other model Camaros as well. The Z/28 LT-1 was also rated at 360hp, 10 less than the Corvette LT-1.
The '70 Camaro SS had a base engine which was a 350-300hp.
The '70 Corvette had the 350-300hp, and the 350-350hp.
I don't know much about the 350-300hp, except that it was a 2bbl engine on the Chevelle. But I do know some about the 350-350hp. It had the basic Chevy steel valve covers, a cast iron intake manifold, hydraulic lifter cam, and a Qjet carb.
A good place to find info on the Camaro LT-1 engines is www.nastyz28.com Look above the pic of the car in the middle of the main page, and you have a string of years, 1970-1981. Look in 1970, and click the "LT-1 Engine Components" link... it tells you what is in all years LT-1 engines, 1970-72. It is under the "Z/28 Special Performance Package" details, near the bottom of the page. Some pictures are there too.
Since the Corvette LT-1 engines and the Z/28 LT-1 engines are the same, all the info you find there should all apply to a Corvette motor as well.
Air_ Adam...You're the Man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great info! I'll let you know what I find. there is a serpentine belt system bolted to the front of my engine so reading the heads is a little tough to say the least. I have some AFR 190 heads I'm picking up tuesday and when I pull the double humps off I'll be able to ID everything. I sure hope it is an LT1! I'll have an early '70s historic block in an historic 3rd gen vert with 21st century induction! ( AFRS & Holley StealthRam MPFI w/ Holley 950 ECM ). It should be an awesome combo.......I'm guessing around 435 - 450 HP. I'll post some pics if I ever figure out how to post something bigger than a thumbnail. I'll let you know what I find...good or bad....THANK YOU!
