I`m pretty sure it`s "XE 284" To tell you to not get it wouldn`t be fair, but I have some experince with them, almost every XE I installed in a BB lost lobes within hours or days..don`t get me wrong I think they are the most powerful hyd cam avaliable.... they just have not worked for me in BBC`s, now with that being said I have done ten years in the engine rebuilding field and another ten almost as auto tech and bbc are habitual cam eaters and the EX line has very aggressive ramps for the diameter of a chevrolet lifters.

I have personally lost 2 XE 294`s in my own engine, after finally resorting to an old prostreet design with even more lift but less aggressive ramps I had no problems. Before you go thinking aww..he must have not had the right springs or lifter were not spinning easily enough, think again I had over 5 large in the short block which I had to rebuild thanks to comp cams.

Now, I have probably put 10-15 of these into SBC`s with no issues what so ever, a couple of SBF`s and they simply make gobs of power with no faliure and 1 chysler BB....it did nothing but work perfectly.

Be careful with what you decide, you could lose quite a bit of loot finding it out the hard way, I would suggest using a street solid roller if you can afford it...I know between the time and costs of losing cams and a 454 short block I wish I would have gotten one right off the bat. Now after having a solid roller in the engine there is no other cam I would ever think of using period.

I AGREE.order a small solid roller from doug herbert.cheaper than comp rollers and work just as good imo.

the rest of the combo sounds good.i had nearly the same combo except it had a turbo 350 and went some low 11's on the motor.

i have had good luck with lunati and edelbrock hydraulic cams.a performer rpm would be a good choice.just make sure you break it in just as the directions will tell you to do.

would i beable to keep my 3000stall with the RPM cam, or would that be to much. Also edelbrock says to use stock rocker arm ratio, why is that.

If anyone would like to suggest any other cams go ahead

yes the 3000 stall would be fine,it will need it.and a 1.7 rocker is the stock bb ratio.i still run the stock ratio on my 540inch roller motor.a 1.72 ratio comp cams roller tip rocker would also be fine.the reason they say that is their springs that they recommend may not handle a 1.8 rocker and cause coil bind.

the rpm cam will easily make 400+ hp with your combo.later on with a good set of aluminum oval ports you coyuld make 500hp with the same cam.

at one time i had a 8.1 compression 454 with a performer cam(not the rpm cam) and peanut port heads,2500 stall, turbo 350,2.73 gears(i think) and it went 13.40's on motor and 12.40's on a 150shot of nos shifting at 5000,the car was fun to drive on the street back then.i have reached the almost unstreetable point with my 540 and that kinda sux.

The problem with the BBC's eating cams are due to mis-machined (alignment wise) lifter bores in the block, in relation to the cam lobes. The bigger and more aggressive the cam/springs the quicker it will be eaten. This problem seems to be more prevalent in later model production engines, and doesn't exist in the Bowtie blocks due to more strict machining tolerances. You can fix a bad block by having a reputable machine shop bore out and bush the lifter bores, but this is very expensive proposition. It's better to just invest the money in a good roller cam, which is insensitive to this misalignment.
