454 Big Block? #3999289

I know I said I was thinking about putting a 496 stroker in my monte but it would not be anytime soon but I have a line on this block and it is fully ready and bored .60.I am told it is a 4-bolt main but I don't know if that is added? I think it will have to be clearenced for the 4.250 stroke but I am not sure. The guy wants 600 bucks. Is this to much? I know it would be for a small block but I don't know when it comes to big blocks? Also is this a good block to run 470-550hp in? I wouldn't build this anytime soon but If the block was affordable I would buy it now and put the block in the garage until I am ready. What do you guys think? Big block guys give me some comments? Thanks

If it's a running engine, $600 is a good price. If it's just the block, I wouldn't pay more than $300 since it's already bored out to close to the max. To build a stroker, you're going to be changing just about everything. Don't spend a lot of money on a complete engine that you're going to strip down to nothing to change. If that's just a block, keep looking. You should be able to find a complete engine for less than that.

BBC engines can take a lot more power than a SBC. 470-550hp is still within the limits of a good stock engine.

Go price out a stock replacement engine from your local parts supplier. That will also make a good foundation for a good buildup.

Its just the block. 600 seemed a little hi to me to. I will look around.I don't really need it now anyway I just thought if that was a decent price I would get it. I will probably start to do a few things here and there like try to find the pulleys I will need and brackets first.Plus I think I am going to put a cage in it just for body flex reasons.I am just going to slowly start getting the car ready for the big block.I might take out the 8.5 and build it up.I have talked to a few guys with stock 8.5s with 454s and 502 crate motors and they say they have had dozens of passes at the track and no breakage and these are all in the 11s with over 500hp.As for the 700r4 it is built but a 496 is a lot of torque and will be pushing the limit of the 700.I will have to ask Dana from pro-built what he thinks but either way a turbo 350 would be way stronger and probably handle the mild 496 that I want to build. Thanks Stephen
