300+ HP with stock running gear

hey all, i got a 327 that came out of a mates vet show car. he put a all alloy 454 BB in it and he was moving away and didn't want to lug the engine to a different city so the day before he left i offerd him $500 for it and he said ok!
this engine was putting out 300+ HP to the wheels in his vet, i was wondering will this engine kill me stock running gear.

While im here got another question the heads it has on it are cast iron but have been ported so extreme that it cant go 1,000 mile without blowing out the exhaust gasket (about 3mm of face left for the gasket to sit on) is there any good heads that will keep the HP where it is or go higher?

If you plan on putting it in the car of your profile/sig, you'll need some exhaust upgrades to keep your car from choking the engine. Similar with the transmission, as you'll need a lot more than stock stall to let that engine get up to its powerband.

There are a lot of heads out there capable of that kind of power. AFR makes some great stuff, even Bowtie Vortecs would do the trick. It must be making its power in the high RPMs, because a 327 doesn't have the displacement to be making a lot of torque. So, you'll want good flowing heads to maintain the power output.

yeah the exhaust has got to go, i sent an e-mail to the guys who did my cat back system to see how mutch a true dual 2.5" Stainless system is gona cost me, this is a 2 year project. i have decided that as of feb next year my Trans-Am is comming off the road and im gona rip it down to a shell and rebuild it. at the moment the 327 is just an option im also looking at a 350 crate engine, the 327 is my main option because the block has had a few thousand spent in its build up, forged pistons, hydrolic roller cam and heaps more (plus it is already in my shed) but im not in the best cash situation atm so it may turn in to a 5 year project to get what i want.

would it be better to go to a 5 speed man with a heavy clutch or auto with a stall?

im gona try keep a budget of about $5000 (well as far as my other half knows i am .)

A stock 5-speed would not be a good choice for a high-reving, no-bottom-end engine. A 5-speed that would handle it is going to be pretty pricey. A T56 would do it, but again a pretty hefty price tag. Then the rear becomes the weak link, and you're looking at a couple of grand for a 12-bolt or 9".

Autos are easier on the whole drivetrain. You will need a lot more stall (at least 3500) than stock, and a TH700 would have to be gone through and beefed up. But, in the end, it would be a lot less expensive ($1500-$2k for a TH700, $1000-$1500 for a TH350).

I just SMSed the guy who had it before me the engine put out 378HP @ 6,000RPM Flywheel on the dyno, he said the power band is 1,500 - 6,000 and he had a 3,200 stall in it but the car was never raced it only saw the show room and his shed, he went to the 454 for the track.
The engine was on the dyno before it went back in the vet, can't wait to see what RWHP i get out of it (before i blow my diff)
