327 swap.. more problems

well as i have been ranting l8ely i am doing a 327 swap into an 89 trans am for a project in my auto class in college..i got the 327 out of my dads junkyard from a 63 vette and after we cleaned it up we ran a compression test before we started to drop it in. cylanders 3,6,8 have broken rings and we pulled the heads off and cylander 1 has grooved walls.. now my question is would it be easier and cheaper to stock rebuild the 327 or would i be better off paying my dad 400 for a 350 from a 1980 stingray with 34k miles (rear end totaled good angine) anyone know good or bad with a stingray engine?

There was nothing special about the 1980 Vette engine. It was just before GM started improving the quality of their castings and machining (which was no worse than it was in 1963).

$400 is a lot less than it will cost you to rebuild that 327. Plus, the 327 heads don't have the bolt holes on the ends of the heads for mounting 3rd gen accessories, which the '80 heads will have.

Somebody out there is looking for a period-correct Vette 327. Let them take on its problems. No doubt you'll be able to pay for the '80 engine with the proceeds.
