85 camaro engine swap

Iam new to this site and I have alot of questions. Please help I have a 350 crate motor part number 12496968 I have had this for a year or so. a week ago I purchased an 85 z28 with a 305 4 barrel and I would like to swap the motors the 350 has the HEI distributer. What problems will I encounter with the stock wiring and the 700r4 transmission? the 350 also has the 1 piece rear main seal. is that an issue? Also if possible I would like to get rid of the control modual and all the electronics that go with it. Is this an option with this car motor combo? i was originally going to use this motor in a older car without a control modual and all the sensors can this work?

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

Take out the 305. Remove the carb, distributor, accessories, sensors, etc. Put them all on the 350 (except the knock sensor - get a 350 unit for that). Install the 350.

Forget the carb and distributor you have on the 350. Assuming this is the stock 305 carb and all in the '85, it's what you want. Sell the carb and distributor that came on the HO crate - recoup some expense while keeping the best for yourself.

The EGR valve won't function because the Vortec heads don't have cross-over exhaust passages, but don't worry about that. Keep the EGR solenoid hooked up electrically, and the computer will stay happy.

Trust me, this is the way you want to go, not that no-good vacuum secondary Holley they put on that deluxe crate engine.

The flexplate that came on the engine will be fine with the TH700R-4.

Any plans for upgrading the exhaust? The stock stuff chokes a 305, let alone a 330 horse 350.

Re: 85 camaro engine swap

Thanks for the technical advice. I was thinking about some headers for the exhaust. It is very clear that you are extremely knowlegable in this field by just talking to you for the first time. I hope you don't get tired of my questions. I will have many more to follow.

Don't worry about having questions. It's why this Board exists. Occasionally you might be told to , or check the FAQ forum, but don't take it personally.

One of the downsides of this Board is people are more than willing to tell you when you're going astray - I don't see that as downside, mind you, but some people do.
