Digital/Mechanical cluster issues after engine swap

Hi guys. I am new to thirdgen and have had some trouble finding a thread to answer this problem and hoping you can help. I bought a 91 RS with a 77 454 under the hood and the speedo, tach and odometer are not working.

My mechanic told me that the cluster is digital and the hookup in the 454 is mechanical and that I should look for an 82-89 mechanical 3rd gen cluster - does this make sense?

To get this thing inspected (which I need to do asap), I at least need the odometer ticking, so do you think this is the answer? If not, where should I begin?

Sorry if I come off as a noobie, this is my first project car...

Thanks for any help you guys can give.

Your mechanic is incorrect. 82-89 Camaro clusters have mechanical speedos, 90-92 electric (not digital). The two versions are not readily interchangeable since the shape of the clusters are different.

Re: Digital/Mechanical cluster issues after engine swap

Thanks, James. This is going to be trickier than I thought...

So is there any way to get my odometer ticking? I am alright with putting in an aftermarket speedo and tach, but I need the odometer going to pass collectors car inspection. Any advice on what to do next? Could I take the mechanical gauges from an earlier cluster and fit them into my current cluster?

Any help you guys can send my way is much appreciated.

What engine did the car have originally?

See this thread for more info on the electric speedo operation https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/engi...d-350-how.html

Re: Digital/Mechanical cluster issues after engine swap

the speedo runs off the tranny, what tranny are you running? Is it electric or mech? You may just need a convertor box and do some wiring, for the speedo at least.
