Hey all I have seen the sites showing where to look for casting numbers and the like on engines but I cannot seem to locate the one on the back of this one. I would like to find out what is in this car for sure. I was able to locate one number below the head on the passenger side that reads: M09219VP but so far that number has gotten me nowhere. The engine is supposedly a crate 350 but I have nothing to verify that other then the previous owners claims. The car this is in is a '84 Z28 H.O. I suppose there is a possibility it is the original engine.

I'd look at the M09219VP again. Although it may be a code for a crate engine, 9VP is not a production code. If the letters are clear and defined, then it's not a production engine.

The casting number is at the back left top of the engine. You have to look down between the firewall and the head to see it. A casting number can tell you if it's a 4" bore block or not for an easy check to see if it's a 305 or a 350 but the casting number can't tell you much more since the same castings were used over many years and in many models.

The number is pretty clear although the 0 could be an O I guess. It seems to have one of the short water pumps on it and hardware. I could not see well enough behind it even with a mirror to get any meaningful numbers off the back I will try again later today

Here is what it looks like although I know it doesn't help much.

That's a standard long water pump.

Can't tell from that photo whether it's a 262, 265, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, or 400.

Odds are it's a 305. It looks like a stock 305 with AC and dual snorkel removed, and chrome valve covers and open element air cleaner.

Because the alternator bracket is attached to the water pump, it will be a late model long water pump not a short one.

The 0 will be a 0 and not an O. I guess I should have looked up the full number.

M = GM of Mexico. It's not original and I doubt it's a performance crate engine but more likely a Targetmaster engine. (standard factory replacement engine with good but not performance castings)
0921 = Sept 21
9VP = Whatever the replacement engine code is. I don't have a listing.

The engine is definitely not original. Get a casting number to see if it's a 350 or a 305. There may be a casting on the side of the block. If the block is new enough, there will be a 5.0L or 5.7L cast into the side.

If you pull a valve cover, you will see Hecho en México cast into the head.

standard factory replacement as in warranty engine? that could explain the po claims of a crate motor

Not necessarily warranty, but a generic low-performance over-the-counter replacement engine.

well if i was a betting man id say that he got that targetmaster engine and technically it would be a crate engine

Any aftermarket engine would be considered a crate engine. Most people think of a crate engine as an aftermarket performance engine. The Targetmaster is just a factory replacement engine. Built to factory specs with factory production parts. Nothing special.

I finally was able to find the casting number.. It is as you all suspected a Target Master 350 according to MorTec. No date info though.

10066036...350...........2 or 4...Target Master/Goodwrench crate motor, 2-piece rear

This cam Has a mechanical Fuel Pump Lobe. This is a low end Torque oriented camshaft.

1.94" Intake valve , 1.50" Exhaust Valve 76cc Combustion Chamber

7 Bolt style Exhaust Flange Standard 85' and prior intake manifold bolt pattern.

Perimeter bolt style Valve Covers. This head is very similar to the old #882 castings from the 1970's

Sounds like a basic factory stock replacement engine. Something you can pick up just about anywhere that sells a replacement engine including NAPA.

According to Kevin McClelland of Flowmaster (muffler company) who used to work for GM, they actually ship at 7.8:1, and they really like the COMP PureEnergy cam, COMP's DualEnergy 255, Lunati's smallest VOODOO, Or Crane's 204/214-110 442/465 cam, and 1.6:1 rockers on the intake side, after break-in.
