Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
I have a 91 trans am and I just recieved my engine (502 ram jet), complete 12 bolt moser rear end with wilwood disc brakes, my front wilwood disc brakes (Thanks Ed), TKO 600 transmission, spohn chasis parts (including 10 point roll cage), be cool aluminum radiator, g tech pro and all other stuff... This saturday I am going to start replacing the parts. (I will update the photos every week, This will be a usefull topic for other people, This project includes all the swaps that people afraid of and I am planning to finish the project in 4 months, we all will see what is going to happen)
Now I need all your help people. I am going to do the whole stuff by myslef. I am posting some pictures of my stuff that I bought and the current condition of the car (I just took out all the stuff inside the car)
Where should I start? I was think of starting with the rear end, rear brakes and than the transmission? Is it a goo path to start the project?
What kind of things are there that I should be careful about? (just for this week's job)
By the way, I live in Turkey so I am not as lucky as you guys in terms of finding the right part
Here are some pictures:
Is there an easier way to upload pictures? It takes too much time if I use imageshack...??
This is my car But it is going to change a little bit by the help of yours I am waiting response especially from the ones that made the BigBlock swap or auto-manual swap... A big thank you for all your responses and helps. I hope this thread will be usefull for others when I am done with the car.
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
ok, last week I have started working on my car and here are some pictures:
I removed the differential, shaft, torque arm, front brakes, a arms, radiator, fan, springs and etc... I had to stop before installing the new diff and a arms and brakes because of the new k member, I had to first pull off the engine and then install the k member and than the a arms and the brakes and soo,
I could not installde 12 bolt mosed too because I need to install the new torque arm and it is still in a differnt warehouse, I did not have much time go and grab it... Any how any suggestions about transmission removal is appriciated...
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
4 months is being very optimistic. It almost took you a month to get started. I'd be surprised if you're ready to drive it around in anything less than 6 months.

Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
things are not same as in US I dont live in a house with amgarage next to it I did not waited 1 month to get started I waited 1 month to find a garage that I can work in it... I am sendin the most up to date pictures of the car... I put the k member on, a arms on, diff on, front brakes on, now this saturday I will put the engine in and check for the headers clearance... I will post other photos 1 week later...
Another thing, I am still studying mechatronics engineering, its my 3rd year and I have lots to do, I barely work on weekdays, generally I work on weekends... I removed the transmission without any problems but it was a though job... Definately needed to be done with 2 people... Anyhow here is the progress:
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
rear wheel
front wheel (again thanks ed, it sure is a tight fit..)
and this is me on the right side with trans am shirt, as you can see It was a though job, I was coverd with oil, It was nasty but I liked it, I had real fun... and this is the picture of our victory
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
now this saturday I will put the engine in and look for the headers and distributor clearance, meanwhile I will cut the hole for the transmission too... Yesterday I was checking the transmission and realize that the input shaft was turning but changing gear was impossible, in the manual, it says to contact with the dealer. I did so and the response was this: HI, BRAD SAID TO TAKE THE COVER OFF AND LINE THE LUGS UP. BUT THE COVER BACK ON. NOW IN NEUTRAL BOTH SHAFTS SHOULD SPIN. TRY SHIFTING IT SHOULD BE SNUG. THIS IS A NEW TRANS. IT WILL NEED TO BE BROKE IN. HE THINKS WHAT HAS HAPPENED IS THE TRANS GOT STUCK IN TWO GEARS DURING SHIPPING. THIS HAS HAPPEN BEFORE. HOPE THIS HELPS. LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED ANYTHING ELSE. GEORGE.
Is this a normal thing? Do you think that it really would help?
I know that there are some serious people whom doing serious jobs... I really woulde be pleased if they give me some suggestions about anything shortly espacially stephan (and most of the moderators)... As you can guess I really want to do this by my self with your helps, last 2 weeks was a busy week I had 3 exams, Computer Science, Signal Progressing, Circuit Theories and 2 days later I have Mechanical Design exam.. but I am still checking out the forums. anyhow as I mentioned before things arent same as in US, Maybe I am the only one in Turkey who does his own job... (this big...) This is because of having no proper place, proper tool to do this... I was really happy while I was staying in US, even I was living in downtown san diego, It is easy to park the car in the garage and work on it... We do not have such a word in Turkey, at least I don't...
Too much feelings..
Now I have a few questions: I do not have a transmission jack, I only have 2 small and 1 big jack, I checked the flywheel and It was pretty heavy... How should I install these? What steps should I follow? Any suggestions???
By the way I am not preparing the car to drag racing... It will be a daily drive car, I will take her out to the track in summer, but not drag, It will be time trial races...
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
Here are the updates:
I am stuck with putting the engine with polyurethane motor mounts, I am trying for 4 weekends and still could not make it. Here is the problem: I managed to put it with older mounts but with poly's it seem very hard. I managed to slide through the bolt on one side but on the other side, the brackets hitting the mount and it does not allow putting the bolt through.
here are the pictures: this is the PS firewall side
this is the PS bumber side
this is the DS bumper side
this is the DS firewall side.
As you can see PS bracket hits the mount so I can't slide the bolt in.
I double checked the brackets side from a thread that I found in forum. (you can see the number in one of the photos and it is at the right side.)
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
This is a very cool built. It will be a fun car to drive when its done. I wish I could afford a 502/manual trans swap, maybe one day.
I know how frustrating it can be living away from where your car is being built. I live over 3 hours from my car and I'm lucky to get to it once a month. Im in Australia so I also know the problem of finding parts.
Good luck with the rest of the build and keep up the good work.

Thank you, I am trying to do my best but school really stops me being with my car. At least the garage that I rented is close to my place so that when I get bored, I grab my beers, open zztop singles, and chill by working on the car. But when I do that It really takes too long One night I entered the garage at 10pm and I was doing something serious, when I opened the garage doors the sun has been rised. It was 6 am I had to go to school that day too It's though but I hope I will see the results of my effort...
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
hello again,
I am about to crank the motor up but I havesome problems,
I am using the original accesory drive kit for big blocks, but the steering pump pulley hits the steering box, If I use a smaller pulley with some modifications on it(march ), It will work fine.
The real question is, will it effect the performance of the steering pump?
other question is that my old dual fans don't fit, do you have any suggestions?
I might go with a thinner one, but be cool's dual fan set doesn't fit either...
I will add some photos tomorrow
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
this is how it hits the steering box. Any suggestions??
Another question to you: Is it ok to locate the oil filter above the engine as I did in the picture? Will it cause any problem or Should I put it another place? If so where should I??
Here are the last photos (attached)
I want to show you the modifications that I did to the headers(attached)
This is the 2nd run... 1st run was much fun but it is not small enoguh for sharing...
http://videos.streetfire.net/video/5...-Am_638485.htm this is the one that I love most... Just pure power
(it was still encoding but when you check the topic probably it will be ok because of the time difference...)
Althoug I did not get many help from you guys, I've managed to fire it up... And it works fine...
Anyhow Thank you all... I am still waiting for my missing parts (clutch fork and shifter) As soon as I recieve them I will be back on roads
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
I finally recieved my fork and shifter, I will do a compleatly new thing to my car. Probobly I will be the the first guy... I will built a new middle console and I will use an operating panel and PLC to control the car's electrical system and accsesories... I will post the pictures when I start to build the template... I think american people did not find this topic interesting, not much question about the swap I really did some serious modifications, I did most of them because of living in Turkey and can not finding the right misc. parts...
Now next week I am sttarting to complete the tranny and the shaft, when I recieve my pedals from Hawks, I will be able to take her to streets...
For the steering pump pulley, I figured out that If a open a place for the bolts to stay in on the bracket, It will be ok to use a smaller pulley.
Of course first I had to say that I was not able to use a smaller pulley because of the bolt heads of steering pump... Anyhow If you guys have any questions I will be glad to answer it...
Trust me, we found it interesting. Sorry if it doesn't seem so, but I think we're mostly in awe of what you've accomplished.
Sorry we weren't more help, either. You're doing some stuff that few have done.
As for the fans, getting pusher fans that mount on the front of the radiator might be your best choice. That may mean two separate fans instead of two fans in one frame/shroud.
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
Oh I'm glad to hear that I figured out the fans, I will chagne it's motor with a smaller one and it will fit... Moreover I will control the fans with the Operatin Panel and I will be able to control the fans manually too... Even I will be able to open and close the two fans seperatly... I think it will look like kitt's technological stuff when I'm done with the panel and PLC Even I will put a screen saver like kitt's light...
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
It's the position of the shifter stick in 4th gear... I need to relocate the stick a little bit back...
I put the tranny in finally (with the new flywheel, cluthc and the pressure plate...)
,
but with 5 great people It was a though job, the tranny was a little heavy but finally, VICTORY.... (the guy with the red coat is my father, Me in the car...)
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
You are correct, you did not get much help. I felt bad each time I did not have the answer you needed. But you ordered the best of everything, and I have never been able to afford that. I have mostly worked with reconditioned factory parts. But you did very well anyway. I thank you for sharing.
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
I still have much to do, tomorrow I am going to handle the shaft issues..., I am still waiting for my pedals... as soon as I recieve them, probably,1 or 2 weeks later I will be back on roads, But still there will be much work to do (Interior and the custom centor console...)
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
Thanks a lot man, I will post new videos soon, we are trying to arrange an organisation this week in our school, I will take my car there and do some burnouts
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
Do you have a pic of the power steering pump pulley now that it is running. I am thinking about using a stock serpentine setup from a 454 or 496 . I can't believe it fit. You guys accomplished alot I am impressed. I want to use a carb on mine so it should be alot easier than yours.
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
once agine i would like to say i love your car! it takes guts to do what you pulled off here in the states; let alone in turkey!!! i regret that i did not find this thread till you were almost done. ihave one question though. do you have any intensions to hook up the A/C ? cant find anyone here. thinking of BBC swap myself. wondering if it will stay cool in 100* weather? any way once agine GREAT JOB on the car.
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
First of all sorry about the late reply, I was gone for a week, we went to trekking tour...
Anyhow back to topic,
I am not planning about putting an AC but It can be done... I am using the stock gm big block serpentine kit and It has an AC delete pulley, If you want to put an AC on it than you should not have any problems (If you hood is high enough)
For the heaing problem, Yes I stongly recommend you to use double fans... I was using only one for a while, when I installed the second fan, it did not pass 200F on high traffic...

Thanks, but you should see the chicks in Istanbul I guess they are much much better than the one's in Adana... Adana's kebaps are AMAZING. Adana is famous for its spicy kebaps...
Did you eat any kebap in Adana?

Wow, I just found this thread. You have done so much that so many havent. To live overseas with an American car and do all that work is AMAZING. You are very smart and should keep doing what youre doing. Custom hood looks real strong.

I have a question folks, do you know the rate of pressure on our stock thirdgen fuel pumps?? how much psi does it supply?
i am not sure right off hand but i would say your ramjet is streching its limits when you step on the loud pedal.... BTW... how much did the PS pulley miss the steering box.
Re: Finally it is happening (305-502, auto- manual, drum-disc swaps...)
It has a 1cm clearance with the steering box, I did the solidworks drawings and used a CNC machine... I was strugling with brakes today and taking a photo of the pulley has slipped from my mind...
I will take the photo tommow I hope (I made a reminder to myself don't worry)
I took her out today after the brakes are done, and I was able to do full throttle in 4th gear, and pump was doing OK.
I learned the values too, here it is:
Ac Delco No:EP241
GM NO:25116163
50 psi operating
24 G.P.H. at outlet
If I am not mistaken, Ram Jet need min 48 psi of fuel pressure... but I will double check with the manual tomorrow...
