88 TBI serpentine setup on 1967 327 block

Hey guys,

I'm halfway through building my 327. The block is from 1967, but I am using modern heads that do have the accessory mounting holes. This is going in my 88 camaro (which currently has 305 TBI & 700R4).

I think all the 88 305 TBI serpentine brackets should bolt up to my 327 since I do have the head accesory holes.

My question is about the harmonic balancer. I know the 327 balancer is right for the engine, but will it work with the serpentine pulley system?

Of course the 305 balancer would be right for the brackets, but does it fit the 327 crank and have the proper balance for the 327?

I can't really compare the two balancers since the 305 balancer is still on the car.

That brings up another question - which flexplate should I use for the 327 with the 88 700R4? I have both a 327 flexplate (loose in the garage) and a 305 flexplate currently still on the car.

Thanks for the info.

PS - As far as the 327 vs 350 debate, I'm already halfway into this 327...there's no turning back now.

305 and 327 are balanced the same, you can use either balancer, as long as its compatible with whatever timing pointer you have on.

Which flexplate you can use will depend on what size the 305 plate is. A 67 327 doesn't have the starter holes drilled to use a 153 tooth flywheel.

Thanks for the info.

About the flexplate & starter holes, can you go into a little more detail? I'm not familiar with the tooth count or the starter hole position differences.

Which combination of starter and flexplate do I want to find? In other words, if 153 tooth count won't work, what tooth count do I want? And would I then use a 1967 style starter or a 1988 style starter?

Thanks for your time.

You need to use the 1967 flexplate and starter, which are 168 tooth, 14". That shouldn't be a problem with the TH700 (a T5 would be a problem), although you may need to get a dual-pattern flexplate so the torque converter will bolt up properly. Most 2-piece rear main seal 168 tooth/14" aftermarket flexplates will have the converter bolt holes for both large and small pattern.
