Casting number. It is on the drivers side, on the back of the block, next to the distributer.

Look here: http://www.mortec.com/location.htm

That site also gives number I.D. But that will tell if if it is atleast a 350 or not.

EDIT I did some research, the 350 cid engine with 270hp that came in the 71 Corvette had a block casting number of 3970010. Hope this helps you.

010 castings were used in just about everything and was used for 302, 327 and 350 blocks.

An engine that was "out of a vette" doesn't mean as much as it did 30 years ago. All it's good for now is if someone was building a numbers matching car and needed a vette engine.

Look for the stamped numbers in front of the passenger side head. Those numbers will tell you a lot more than the casting number.

The tune-up parts are relevant to what is bolted to the engine now, not 30 years ago. The are more corvette engines out there than there were ever corvettes made.
