crate engine question

http://www.cdpautomachine.com/engine...longblock.html
Found this motor and am very interested, but on the site they have it as a Carburetor motor and further down the list they have FI motors that cost more and dont make as much power. What makes that long block a carb motor other then the intake manifold they give you with it? Could I put my mega ported TPI set up on that without changing cams?
Its a little cheaper then the zz383 I have been looking at, and it keeps the traditional cyl head where the zz383 has vortec heads, so by going with this motor I don't have to buy a vortec tpi base. just trying to get an idea of whats going to work better with the ported TPI set up.

Re: crate engine question

It says right on there that the engines are built per order. So if you call them let them know what you have and what you want they should be able to shoot you a price. The heads on that engine also appear to be perimeter valve cover bolt too so there is an other issue. You would need a different intake for those too.

Don’t worry about the heads, the heads on the zz383 are the GM fastburn heads which are drilled and taped for both vortec and early style intake manifolds, also they are drilled and taped for both center bolt and perimeter bolt valve covers.

The Fast Burn heads may be drilled for both Vortec and older style intakes, but a Vortec is the only type you should EVER consider.

Even a mega ported TPI base is going to be lacking on an engine like that. A Holley/Weiand Stealth Ram solves the TPI hardware problems, and it is available in both Gen I and Vortec styles.

The reason that engine is called "carburetor" and the EFI ones make less power is the cam. You might be able to tune that cam into submission, but your chances for success would be greatly improved with an EFI-friendly cam like the Comp XFI series.

Of course, for what that engine would cost you and what else you'd have to buy to get it running properly, you should be able to make 425 HP with a cam change LS1 swap.

(BTW, their picture doesn't match their description. World S/R Torquers are iron, the pic shows aluminum Edelbrock heads.)
