305TBI to 350TBI

I have a 89 RS with a 305TBI and have a 350TBI out of a 95 Truck and was told I would have to switch allot of stuff like my intake and then it may not work (which doesn't make much sense to me). Can someone please explain the steps I would have to take to put this engine in my camaro. Also I was wondering if I would need to change the chip in the ECM or would the one for the 5.0 work. If the 95 engine is going to be a problem I think I have located one out of a 92 something with TBI that I could get but was just wondering what is involved in this engine swap. If its going to be a big hassle I will just rebuild the 305 (Because it has bad rings) and put it back in but I would much rather have the 350 even if it needs to be rebuilt. Thanks in advance for all responces

Re: 305TBI to 350TBI

I was just doing a search for something very similar. I have almost the same question

I’ve been told that its hard to tell a 305 from a 350 without getting inside the motor, and that they are the same on the outside,… If this is true wouldn’t we be able to take all the accessories off of the 305 and bolt them right up to the 350? I imagine heads might be different, as might the intake, but if I want to go from my 305 to a 350 I can reuse stuff like the power steering pump, starter, alternator, etc,…

Re: 305TBI to 350TBI

a tree oh five and tree fifity are the same outside, so you can bolt your tree oh five stuff right up, givin its the same generation block, and it prob is since it s TBI motor

you can put your intake on it to and your TBI to help make it easier, but IMO if your putting another motor in spend the extra cash and get a Edelbrock or holley TBI intake and a holley TBI

I forgot to mention mine is TPI, I imagine the 305 TPI fit the 350? Would it be a bottleneck?

Re: 305TBI to 350TBI

see that was what I was thinking, I thought all sbc parts were interchangeable and when they said they read I would have problems with this switch I didn't understand why. Heck I should be able to use the same intake thats on the motor I thought and not have to change it out with mine or is there some reason I would have to swap the intake and TBI. Thanks for the replies

As far as buying a new intake and TBI thats not a problem either, I was just wondering if this would be a big problem like they are trying to tell me. Also would I need the prom out of a 5.7 ecu or would mine work from the 5.0

And just how would I be able to tell if it was the same generation motor? is there an easy way to tell? I am sorry if these questions sound dumb but I have rebuilt Mopar engines just about all my life but have never swapped engines like this before (always just took the same engine out and rebuilt it and stuck it back in)

Ok noob question, I know that the term "PROM" has something to do with the computer, but what is PROM?

Programmable Read Only Memory.

The 305 TBI stuff may bolt up to a 350 TBI engine, but the 305 computer won't be happy because of the PROM programming loaded for the 305.

Re: 305TBI to 350TBI

so it would be best to replace the prom or the whole ECU if possible?

Another question, do i have to change the TBI and intake or should the intake and TBI that is already on the 95 engine work just as good?

You'll want the 350 TBI unit. No differences between the intakes.

PROM or entire ECM - your choice.
