Re: olds swap

the mounts and stands are out of a 74 cutlass. the only thing is the mount has to go in the front 2 holes on the block. i will be making a motor plate for it. as you can see from the pics a hei will not fit. headers will be sandersens sbo shorty rear dumps. there is more room for headers its about 4" from head to frame.

Re: olds swap

Very cool.I've always wondered what one of the torque monster Olds 455s would do in a 3rd gen.Be sure to post some track times when you get that far.

My sick and twisted mind still wants to do a 500 Caddy swap, even though it would be a nightmare.

Re: olds swap

lol caddy 500. got one going in a 91 lx stang with a 4l80. yesterday i was pulling a 425 and th400 caddy out to put in a 78 cutlass. i know the 425s are crap but it wont be in a 5000lbs car eather. im a big third gen guy but i love my olds to. i sold a 70 442 last fall and said my next car would be something i would like more than any so i came up with is what you see. it took me a bit to find a clean 82 indy z. claen as in body not having been rusted out. as for engine i have a few. the 350 i put in runs. anouthe 350 out to 362 using 400 sbc pistons. then i have a dx block and a 455 short block. i would love to put the 455 in. i was thinking if i do the bbo im going to use the 7" rod with pontiac 455 piston. it will put me around 11.5 to one. just dont know if a t top car will take alot of torq off idle. to fit the bbo it has to have manual breaks

Re: olds swap

the caddy 500 would be farly easy to put in a third gen. i would just use a engine plate to mount the engine and spohn sells the trans mount with trailing arm hook ups. the only thing is with engine plates you have to have limiting bars. the plate WILL NOT stop a engine from going forwerd or back. if some one tells u the trans mount will hold it ill call bs or thay dont have a clue. maybe this winter ill find a new third gen for my girlfriend and put a 500 caddy in it. i also have a 89 fire bird for my son that we are putting a 75 pontiac 400 w 700r4 in. he will be 15 soon so i have a year to get that one done.

Re: olds swap

I have done this swap as well. I ran a 350 Olds in my 90 firebird.

What trans are you running? The reason I ask is that it dictated where my engine mounts went. As a result, my big cap HEI fit. It was snug, but not worse than the Chevy Big Cap HEI from 85.

I ran a 700r4 with a trans dapt adapter plate. I guess that MAY have pushed the engine forward a half an inch or so from the Chevy location, but not much. I put the engine in while bolted to the trans, then put the trans in the factory spot. THEN I set the engine down and marked the motor mount holes with spray paint. I then pulled the assembly out and drilled some holes while slotting others.

I like the 76-79 Trans Am motor mount setup better than the Olds setup. I used the flat strap on the block and then moved the mounts where they looked like they were the most out of the way. Those mounts ended up bolting up about halfway between the front and back set of holes.

Anyway, good luck with your project! I am happy to see others doing it too!!

Re: olds swap

Also, I saw a guy on here use the 82 Cutlass motor mounts for the 307 and his engine was too high. His oil fill tube hit the hood in the front if I remember. It's an old thread...

Re: olds swap

i have not had any time to get back to finnish it. its a 200-4r trans. its just sitting in there till i can get back to it. the tube would be no biggie just pull it and put a freeze plug in. just have to have valve covers with oil fill. i have not set the hood on to see but looks like it will clear.

Re: olds swap

man, that looks good. U got me wanting put my 403 in the camarolds. I havn't parted it out that much yet. (Only sold eibach springs, a/c deletion box, b&m shifter, rear shocks, and traded my 3.23 rear-end for 2.73 read-end). Umm i been looking for allout street-killer. And I could put the v-6 body kit back on it. Gut it completely. Find every way possible to lighten it. And go hunt some local hondas (reason I said hondas is cuz we have had issues in the past). LOL. Man u got me thinking.Or this will be cool. my 81 cutlass is Diesel. I plan on taking the Diesel 350 out and swapping in a 455 next year or wheneva i finish the 455. I could take the 350 DX out convert it to gas and turbo charge that bad boy and stick it in the camaro. UUMMMM I'll brb I got to look into this. I might seriously do this

Re: olds swap

if thats what you want i would use the diesel have btr put 425 crank in it. bore it to 4.125. use the rocketracing heads and intake. a 400 shot of n20. if you are looking at street racing it have fun getting it to hook. i would also make the engine sound like a stock 305 and let the n2o make the diff. 2 stage it 150 about 60 feet out then 250 about 150 feet out. should make lots of them cry to momma.

Naw thats money. I figured it out. If I use 350 5,6,7A, or 307 5a heads i would have a CR of 7.9:1. Which I have a set of #6 head but they need to be completely rebuilt. But I could get a set of 307 5a heads for cheap. And with the parts I have off the 307 I could make it work. And it would be fun. I was really hoping to use the 403 heads. But now I know why they say it is a dog. Even with a 64cc head swap you will only have 7.9:1 CR which is perfect for a turbo.

Re: olds swap

Just curious, since I'm not too familiar with Olds engines. I know alot of BBO and SBO parts will interchance, and I did a little math on this...

If one used a 403 block, and a 455 crank, that makes something like a 515ci engine. Is it actually possible to use that block with that crank to build something like this?

Re: olds swap

the sbo uses a 2.5 inch main and the bbo has 3inch. you could cut the bbo crank down but i think you would brake the crank eazy. the diesel is a sbo block with bbo mains so you take a 425 4inch stroke and put it in. a455 has to much stroke 4 1/4 for the sbo. the 425 crank needs about 3/8 off the counter weight to fit. take the bore from 4.057 to 4.125 and you have a 427

Re: olds swap

yah its up there. the engine in the z now has 8 heads. its just for mock up. if you have a stock 403 and go from the 83cc chamber to the 66 of the 6 headsthe cr will be around 9to1. 403 are ok for the street but you will never be really fast in the 9s. the block will give out. but as far as cheep fun gos on the steet. put a cam the 6 heads holly sd intake and 750-850 carb and it will rock the hondas around your house.

Well, I do decided against the 403. I goin to build the 455. It will take longer. It is twice the engine. I have some E heads for it. I just idk. If Im goin to build the E heads or just buy some Edelbrocks. It would only be about $500 more. So I just got to do some thinking. I will have my miltary bonus in Nov so thats when I would do it. But I have all the bolt-on parts for both SBO and BBO but I want the BBO torque.
