305 4bbl to 383 stroker 4bbl

Ok so i bought a 1987 camaro i want to say is a Z28 but all badging has been removed in place of a horralbe paint job so i really don't know. the motor that is in it is a 305 4bbl but i can tell from the old air intake system the car used to be a tpi. I want to put a 350 from a same or later model year in, and i want to stroke it out to a 383. i need to know what i will need from my old engine and what will have to be new or special made.
Thank you in advance.

you shouldn't need anything "special made" as you put it. As for what to save, save it all until you get the 383 fired up and running. As for what you need, you need to start with a little more planning. Define your goals for power or acceleration. How will you be using the car? Will you end up carbureted, or go back to EFI?

Re: 305 4bbl to 383 stroker 4bbl

I want to keep it carburated ,and i want it to be a car i could drive everyday but still take out to the track. My goal is around 340hp or running mid to high 13's on the track. What i ment by "special made" is like difftent mounting brackets for things like my alternator or power steering pump. I've heard almost everything from my 305 will bolt right up so i was just wondering.

Re: 305 4bbl to 383 stroker 4bbl

The best news is that your goals are easily reachable with a Vortec-headed 350, you don't have to go the stroker route unless you really want to. All your front accessories will mount up just fine as long as you don't try to use old 327 heads. They're not very good anyway. The next step is to decide 350 or 383. Are you wanting seriously smoky burnouts? Are you wanting the potential to run deep into the 12s? Or 11s on nitrous? 383. Does gas mileage matter? Is 13s still gonna be quick enough a year after you get it running? 350.

Running in the 12's would be great and so would nice smoky burnouts, I'm honestly trying to get the best bang for my buck, and gas mileage doesnt matter. I really want a powerplant that has room to grow.

I'm doing that with a computer controlled q-jet 350. See my vBGarage.

So now you're sure you're doing the 383, next up is getting an '87-up block, and choosing heads. AFR 195s or Dart Pro 1 Platinum 200s should be at the top of your list, not mere Vortecs.
