305 carb to 350 carb swap

I just picked up a 350 out of an El Camino. The engine is mostly complete, its missing the carb and a few other random parts. The parts that are missing I'm very confident I can just take from the 305. The car is a 85 trans am with a th350 tranny. Oh the engine came attached with a th350 tranny as well. Only $150 for the both of them! I guess this is more of a suggestion thing that asking a question. For an overview of what I want is this: I want the car streetable but still real fast. I dont know what the HP would be. Whatever it ends up as I guess. I was hoping to list off some stuff that I want and maybe get some feedback about what I should specifically get and maybe some suggestions to add as well. Im looking to get a holley 700 cfm carb. I want to get more mild cams with a 12 degree lobe sep. I'll get my exhaust done before I put the engine in, 3" havent decided what muffler to get yet. Im gonna make my air intake into a dual snorkel. The engine will be tore down cleaned up and painted. And chromed out where possible. Gonna get a 3.73 rear end too. I would like to supercharge it in the future as well. Any suggestions on what else I should add? Or specifically get? Sorry for the long post

Forget the Holley carb. Use the one off of the 305. Basically take the 305 out, transfer over everything that bolts on or screws into the 305 over to the 350, including the intake manifold, carb, distributor, and all the other misc sensors & such.

I assume you meant 112 degree lobe separation.

If & when you get around to supercharging it, you'll be taking the engine back out again, anyway, to build it up properly for that application.

Re: 305 carb to 350 carb swap

i've got to rebuild my carb. Should I just rebuild it or get a different one? Would I need to get a different fuel pump as well? And yes that is what I meant for the cams

Just rebuild it. There is plenty of information about q-jet rebuilding on the Carburetor forum. You don't necessarily need a different fuel pump, although a new one might be in order. The Carter M6626 is a good choice.

Re: 305 carb to 350 carb swap

thanks. What should I replace as I am doing this? Aside from broken/missing things. Any other performance thing I should add in while the engine is out and apart? I suppose what I mean by that is parts worth while to do

Exhaust for sure.

Cam is pretty simple and inexpensive to upgrade.

Were you planning a complete rebuild for the engine?

Re: 305 carb to 350 carb swap

not necessairly a complete. just a major overhaul cause the 350 needs a lot of replacement parts. I was told that its a running motor

I'd include pistons, rings, bearings, cam & lifters in a rebuild - how many replacement parts are left?

Not much difference between a "rebuild" and a "major overhaul". You might split hairs over whether or not machine work (bore cylinders, turn crank) is involved.

Re: 305 carb to 350 carb swap

Ok I'll include those things thanks. The 305 is complete, its my daily driver so I can take whatever I need from it. And I suppose your right. Is there any specific brand of those parts you mentioned that are better than others?

Re: 305 carb to 350 carb swap

I suppose since its my stuff i'll look and then post the site where its at and maybe could you tell me if its right for me to use

i just found this cool "master kit"
http://www.northernautoparts.com/Pro...uctModelId=380
at the bottom of that page there is optional things to add/modify. Should I get any of those?

And I just remembered something about my carb on the 305. Its missing the butterfly valve choke thing. The thing that makes it run a little better when its cold. Does that affect my car in any way besides if its cold?

Several years ago (like 12) I got a similar kit from them. Not bad. Too bad they don't have an upgrade option for the gaskets.

What heads are on your 350? Odds are they are something like 882 castings, which are pretty poor performers. Your 305 heads would be better.

Before you order anything, you need to know what condition the 350 is in - is it already bored .030" over? Wouldn't be surprised if it is. Whether or not it has been, does it need to be bored now? If so, how much?

A cam upgrade wouldn't be a bad idea. But, before we could make a recommendation, we'd need to know what you expect out of the engine and what you're going to use it for. You'll also have to decide what heads you are going to use before you decide on pistons.

The missing choke butterfly would only affect cold operation. Any idea why it was removed?

Re: 305 carb to 350 carb swap

But you can change the gaskets? It has an option for it unless its a different gasket. Its not bored out as far as i know. Im still in the process of taking the engine apart. Any idea on how I would remove the distributor? A part of it isnt coming off preventing me from getting into the engine internals. Speaking of, Im not sure what its called but its the large plate right below the carb (at least where it should be) has a lot of sealant type material, is that ok? My plans arent major performance wise, just exhaust is the biggest. I just want to be fast when I want. And I have no idea why the valve was removed.
