i just bought a 91 rs. 305 tbi. 5 speed manual. dont know what type of tranny or anything. not really a car buff. very mechanically inclined, but been into cars. i really like this car, and it is in really good condition body wise. the motor tranny on the other hand is the thing im worried about. i know nothing about swapping out or rebuilding engines...i know to have a mechanic do it, would be outta the question. im on tight budget with family.
my question is. i wanna swap it out for a 350.
will the tranny i have work?
if not what do i look for?
motor, what years and what will work?? whats best
i was reading about tbi and tpi, dont have a clue about this stuff....will tbi work in a 350? if so what motor do i need to make this happen? or is there somthing i need to do?
electronics: is there a lot if i need to deal with in a swap? fuze wise and ecm???
rear end: will my rear end handle a 350?
is there a step by step way to swap, or rebuild?
where do i start?? find parts then rebuild or swap. thats another thing...i think the car run decent...meaning the motor in it. should i rebuild? is it cheaper?
now for the current engine situation. oil pressure fluctuates from 15 to a little above 30. 15 when im idling and then up to about 30 or so when im going. is this right??
i have straight piped after the cat. at work i revved it up a couple time for a buddy at work. on my way home. i noticed the overall tone and sound changed. and it drove a little diffrent.
when i bought the car, i would start it, it would start quiet, i would drive it normally, when i stopped and got out i hear this low sounding ur ur ur ur ur with each idle of the engine...sounds like its coming from the lower mid underneath......tranny engine connect area. somthing shaking or rubbing or somthing
this is my concern for either the swap or rebuild. i wanna keep the car...i dont trust this engine and tranny anymore. and somthing needs to happen quick.
start from begging i guess. step by step....i want this to happen

i know im askin alot. any help for anyone would be MUCH appreciated.
If you would spend about 72 hours reading on here you would find all your answers, but yes, you can install a 350 and keep it TBI and keep your T% transmission and 7.625" rear axle. If you're not after big HP numbers, just find a TBI 350 from most any '87-'95 fullsize halfton chev/GMC pickup, be sure to get the computer and injectors, you won't need the exhaust manifolds or front accessories, you'll be reusing the ones from your car. They're a direct fit, no hassles. If your 350 comes from a donor with an automatic, which is likely, you'll need to put a pilot bearing in the rear of the crankshaft. This is also the time to have your flywheel resurfaced and install a new clutch. You will be reusing all the wiring from your original engine, so get a roll of masking tape and a sharpie so you can label everything before disconnecting anything, then take plenty of well-lit photos before disconnecting anything. You should be able to get an engine for under 500, while rebuilding your 305, which probably isn't necessary, would be difficult to do right for that price. That brings us to your mysterious noise. I don't have a clue from your description, but going to a 350 is so worth it that I'd take any excuse. It's probably not something serious enough to merit either a rebuild or a replacement, and the wise thing to do is to fix what you have and save the money you want to spend on a 350.
The trans will be fine as well as the rearend, but all the connections will only go back t one place if you do it yourself, if you have a brain you will be able to do it, i would upgrade to headers if i was you, but the manifolds of course will work.
