Hello I was wondering if swapping an L98 motor into a 86 camaro that has an LG4 motor is worth it or would it be smarter to go with a carbed 350. What do you need to do to complete the swap? How can you make around 350-425hp from this type of motor? And Does anyone know Of where i could find one for sale?
Thx
swapping in this motor will require a bit of wiring fun (whole new harness would be your best bet), but there should be no issue bolting it in. Now for that kind of power levels, you'll need to upgrade a few other things on the vehicle to not get stuck stranded (rear, transmission come to mind).
if you're starting out completely fresh, there are probably better direction to go to get you to those power levels.
The most horsepower that i've read about with a 305 is a build that makes 325, With the L98 it comes with 240hp, isn't a stealth ram intake, headers, cam, kn cold air, going to make more power? I know that the tpi's have a harder time breathing, so the exhaust, and intake going to make a big difference holley claims a 30 to 40 hp gain with the stealth ram intake ???
Tranny is already been rebuilt with shift kit etc..., rear gears aparentley don't have to be to steep wit a tpi to keep them in the torque brand. I have an electric fuel pump right now do i need another one in the tank?

Get a 350 longblock (you asked where you could find one for sale, I linked an example). Put the LG4 carb, distributor, etc., on it.
I'm trying to say you can get more power out of that system, and for less money, than you ever could out of TPI. To say nothing of it being a lot less hassle than converting to TPI.
I did the LG4 to L98 Long block swap using the factory carb and distributor (auto trans) back in 1993 and can give you some advice.
What I did - swap out the long block and put all the LG4 stuff back on, supplementing with a performer EGR intake and headers. About 290hp in tuned form without any other changes. Since mine was an 84 with the non roller, I did have to change the distributor gear to a hardened one, other than that, everything else was cosmetic/power adding. Keep in mind that it was a Corvette L98 with aluminum heads that necessitated an oil pan change to a Camaro/Firebird one. Since I painted the pan black, the motor is 100% stealth. The stock trans lasted all of 2 days, even with a big cooler. L98 needs an electric fuel pump (in tank/right outside) as it came EFI from the factory.
