Did some research and on the fence for an engine package
Hey guys, just joined the forum. I actually don't have a Camaro, I have an 87 Silverado 2wd truck but from what I read, this is the forum with all the knowledge regarding TPI and TBI setups.
I am currently running a tired 305 LO3 with a few bolt ons (true duals, injector spacer, TBI spacer, open element). It is backed by a 700r4 on its last legs. I plan on having it rebuilt when I do an engine swap.
Here are the engine packages I am considering and what I learned about each. The L31 Vortec. A regular LO5 equipped with L98 heads and good cam. Or, my neighbor's 305 complete TPI engine.
The L31 looks like a great package. Buy it from GM you get a nice warranty and of course great flowing vortec heads. I would leave the cam alone on this package. Cons include expensive TBI adapter and needing someway to plumb egr, costing more time and money.
The LO5. From what I hear, this engine equipped with L98 heads and a good cam, yields great power and probably costs less than the L31. No adapters or EGR plumbing needed.
My neighbor has a 79 camaro that has a complete swapped TPI 305 setup from I guess a newer camaro. Hasn't been started in years but I remember when it was started with open headers it sounded built. He wants to sell it since he is swapping in a 572 I'll have to ask further details about the specs. It's complete with computer, harness, etc. In this case, I am with a 305 which can be a negative but, since it's complete with TPI injection, I would probably use that, of course I would need a TPI pump but it is a better package over TBI anyways. This is the only way I would run the TPI system. If I go with those other engines, I would stick with TBI. Also, throttle bracket would have to be modified as well as fuel lines, which can cost some fabrication time and money. Something to consider.
What I am looking for, with whatever I decide is something that delivers more power than my weak LO3 (which I'm sure they all would), good mpg, and the least amount of heavy modification.

We need to be careful about keeping this applicable to 3rd gens per Board rules, but back in '04 my brother got a rebuilt L98 long block and put his LO5 stuff on it, along with some Pacesetter headers and a TB spacer in his '93 1500. He loves it. Since you're starting with a 305, you'll have to find TB and ECM for an LO5 if you want to go that route. Shouldn't be too expensive.
