Forget about the 366. The bores are too small. The 427 truck block is the same bore as a 454. You could install a 454 crank with no problems.

The only problems that you'll have is the deck height. The truck blocks (medium and heavy duty like the one you mentioned) have a deck height .400" taller (10.2") than a car block (9.8"). This is because they use pistons with an extra compression ring. To use an automotive intake you need special spacer plates or a tall deck intake. You'll also need .400" longer con rods or special pistons. You'll need the original push rods or an aftermarket set .400" longer.

Tall deck blocks are the best way to stroke an engine easily with a few aftermarket parts as long as there's room under the hood for the extra height.

Another problem you may find is the extra height could cause clearance problems with headers.

KOO!so i could punch it out .060 and throw in a 454 crank and be half way there.any way i can use the rods in this truck 427 with that 454 crank?or diff rods with the stock crank? SO i guess the bigger the car the better lol.Is all the .400 stuff easily available and not cost too much more?
This will be a pita but when im done ill have a 427 or 454 for way cheaper then a crate one...i dont mind spending the time if it kicks ash when im done.Rockin!
anybody else want to put in thier $.02?
i dont plan on this going into my camaro....
im probhably going to part it out($2700 worth of new parts, good t-5 setup, posi, etc)
id be glad to trade for a set of heads, intake and a crank lol

thanks all
mike

Actually you can punch out most 427T blocks .125

All the .400 longer stuff is available since the racers like using a tall deck block to easily get more CID.

Take a 427T block and bore it out .125". Put in a 4.125" stroker crank. Use 6.485" rods with 454 +.125" pistons and you'll have 496 CID.

Take the 427T block bored out .125" with a stock 454 4" stroke crank. Use the .400" longer rods of 6.535" and 454 +.125" pistons and get 481 CID.

Personally I'd rather have a 4.500" bore Merlin block and build a 540 CID with a short deck. 600+ CID can be reached with a tall deck 4.500" bore block.

The only way you could use the 427T con rods is in a short deck block. All BBC con rods are the same length of 6.135". They're balanced differently for different engines but they're all the same length. The 427T block is .400 taller so they use the taller piston with the extra ring to compensate for the extra length.

I'd go for the 427 without thinking too much - as long as the price is right. They are really expensive to buy parts for these days, but they rock! Oh, watch out with the 454 crank. 427 and 454 share the same everything . . . almost. Early 427 blocks don't have clearance for the larger throw on the 454 crank. You may have to grind away the block to make room for the crank. I did the same thing around 15 years ago! A die grinder did the trick in about 1 hour or so. You just have to be careful not to cut into the water jacket.

good luck
