Anyone good with date codes?

I just picked up my 350, got it home. I am trying to look up the block codes, and am having a bit of trouble. v0329zba. Thats the date code from the block. Head casting number is 462264. I can find that head casting number all over the place, and I know the first part of the block date code......v= flint, 03=march, 29 =29th day. What i cant find is the rest of it. What the hell is the zba? corvette mike told me the z was standard for the 84-85 vette, but he has no idea what the ba is. Any ideas, or links?

I am very happy with the purchase, nice clean motor, new cam, lifters, and only a year on the valve job. He even threw in an edelbrock performer intake. I wont use it, but it might be worth 50 bucks to someone.

Are you sure about that head casting #? Is it perhaps 462624? If so (the # you posted isn't listed on mortec.com), hate to be the one to have to say it, but those are rotten heads.

I don't know about the date code. I've never paid any attention to that stuff. Irrelevant, in my mind. Unless someone is doing a numbers-matching resto, in which case the VIN wouldn't match, anyway.

Re: Anyone good with date codes?

Yep, I had the number mixed. I dont know what makes the heads crappy other than the obvious smog bumps I see everywhere, but they should be easy enough to grind, and polish away. I measured the valves, and although they arent the 2.02/1.6, they do measure 1.94/1.5. So not the best, but not the worst of that casting number. 76cc heads should be just fine for the build we are doing. Any build suggestions are appreciated. We do know we will be using a isky 270 mega cam.
2000-6200 .465 .000 270° 221° 108°
HYDRAULIC .465 .000 270° 221

Weiand air strike intake, and a holley 750 carb. I have a brand new edelbrock performer intake, but im not sure I like it all that much. I plan on leaving the bottom end alone since it is in great shape, except for a new high volume oil pump, and a new pan. The trans is a memphis performance 700r4 with a 2500 converter. I may change this out to a bte th350 with a full manual valve body, depending on cash flow. Im not looking for an 11 second car, just something to put some power to the street. I could use some help in picking a nice but cost effective set of rocker arms.

Again, and build suggestions are much appreciated.
Thanks folks.

Large and poorly shaped combustion chambers, ports that don't flow well regardless what you do to them. Thin castings that are prone to cracking. Hot spots, poor flame travel. Other than that, 624's are fine - they really shine as door stops and boat anchors.

A set of Vortecs (untouched except for valve springs) would run circles around 624's. With a Vortec-specific Air Strike 8502 intake, you could make some serious power.

Re: Anyone good with date codes?

Unfortunately a new set of heads isnt in the budget, so they will have to do for now. Its a shame my old 305 heads are no better, or id rework, and use those.

Re: Anyone good with date codes?

stock L83 "624"might not be the best out there, but they
(like all stock chevy heads)really can benefit from a mild
port job:bowl area,intake short side radius,intake port
match, guide boss streamline, exhaust port slight enlarge
and raise.
On my mild 350 they make good power up to 5500-
when the vette engine in my car was stone-stock it
went lame above 4200 or so
Modification/porting of the crossfire intake and the port
job on the heads made all the difference

When I bought my 90 vette it had a weird 3 letter suffix code much like yours and mortec showed it as being a 70'ish 350 truck motor. However the casting number back by where the bellhousing bolts comes back as a 87-90'ish 350 rollercam 2 or 4 bolt. I had to do a head gasket change on this car and it was indeed a factory roller cam block. However it also lacked a VIN number on the stamp pad so it's probably just a over the counter replacement motor.

Re: Anyone good with date codes?

Here is what I will be doing as far as porting the heads a bit. This is the first place I want to start. The areas marked with the arrows are the secetions im looking to blend. There is a gallery area that has some cracks, and flashing that looks like it would want to come off at some point. Is it ok to grind this flashing away, and bevel the lead edges?

Re: Anyone good with date codes?

I am thinking that the porting should be pretty damn easy. Being a die maker, i have everything i need to do whatever is required, and have extensive experience in mold polishing. What finish should I be aiming for? I can get to a mirror finish if thats what works best.

Re: Anyone good with date codes?

in the combustion chamber,i would just remove any
major rough spots and blend in that area around the
exhaust valve in the chamber, definatly port match the
intake ports, cleanup flash out of oil returns. the heads
will have to be disassembled in order to grind and port
where it is most needed-that machning ridge inside the
ports under the valves(make sure to keep the parts all
in order and protect the valve seats) when i did my
intake and heads,i hooked a little #194 bulb up to a
12v transformer, covered the connection to the bulb
with silicone rubber and stuck that into the ports
while grinding for much better visability for the die
grinding i used an electric die grinder with a carbide
burr hooked to a variac varible transformer to slow
the die grinder to a more managable speed for
precision work. Don't want to go overboard on the
porting or you might create thin spots or hit water!
